Talking The ultimate Loo

Some friends of ours have just returned from a holiday to Malaysia. We were discussing their trip and what the saw and did when my girlfriend said the hotel had an odourless toilet. It was early in the evening so I knew I hadn't had too much wine and I wasn't hearing things. We get to travel a lot with my DH's work so I have seen some pretty fancy loos. My favourite was the one that cleaned itself after every use. I want one of those at home. But a completely, 100% all the time - even when in use (did I put that delicately enough) odour free toilet and hence odour free bathroom - this I had to see.

So after a little Google research not only have I found it but great news - it is sold in Australia. It is called OdourVac

"The system is operated via an OdourVac inline fan located in the ceiling space. A ducted pipework system then extends vertically down through the wall cavity and connects directly into the back of the cistern. Odours are drawn directly from the toilet bowl via the cisterns internal overflow pipe, through the inline fan and exhausted directly to the eaves or an external wall. Alternatively, if your ceiling space is restricted or for a double story, we also have roof mounted fans available.
How is the fan activated?

All OdourVac fans are supplied with a 3-pin plug for easy connection to a 240v GPO (power point) located adjacent to the fan. Power is then wired directly to the room and depending on your preference the fan can be activated by any one of the three following options:
  • Connecting to the light switch (great for internal bathrooms)
  • A separate fan switch
  • Attach the system to a movement sensor switch
Unlike conventional exhaust fans the OdourVac system is only required to operate whilst the toilet/bathroom is in use. Typically conventional fans have to operate for longer periods to ensure all the steam and odours are extracted (see below)."

Talking about loos...this is a topic most people are a bit squeamish about embarking on, but I'll take up the challenge!

I'm a full-time carer for my Mum & I've discovered elderly people are reluctant to talk about toileting habits, or else it just doesn't occur to them to mention it if they are having any difficulties. When I discovered my Mum was having difficulties, I did a bit of research on the net and discovered a 'Bidet Seat' which simply replaces a normal seat, but has all the features of a normal bidet. It has a seat warmer, rear wash, feminine wash, & air dryer, all of which have temperature controls that can be set to your personal choice. Believe me, this is a life changing device that gives elderly people back their dignity, as well as making life easier for them.

But not only for elderly people, those of you who have travelled extensively will have experienced the 'luxury' of bidets. I bought one for myself also, for my ensuite. They are so hygienic & refreshing, especially for certain times of the month. They plug into a normal outlet. Any competent DIYer could install it, or you can have it installed for you. The brand recommended to us was Coway, and boosters to raise the height, and support arms are also available.

How funny I just installed one in a client's bathroom. They were in their late 60's and wanted a bathroom to suit them as they got elderly. Plus as you said they have traveled a lot & experienced bidets.
The embarrassing part was when they asked me did I want to test it out

I lived in Korea for a few years and these bidet seats are everywhere. It's sooo nice sitting on a heated lav seat in the middle of winter. However, the real challenge for me was trying to figure out the Korean instructions and getting up the courage to try it out ... and not hit the wrong button at the wrong time
