Default Thisisme's kitchen - work in progress

Just thought I'd create an official thread for our new kitchen

We've decided to extend the cabinetry along the wall all the way to the pantry (underneath the staircase). I've drawn up some plans using Google sketch up. I am still learning how to use and hope to improve it in the near future

The blue on the right is transparent glass walls between the dining room and foyer/staircase.

Would love to hear your thoughts on everything as well as the number of overhead cabinet doors. Do you think 6 looks good or would it look better if there were 4 instead? Also, what about the dimensions in between the island and cabinets, island and wall nib on the left hand side, and doorway and island?

Would we have to use the same handles on all drawers regardless of their width? Or would you recommend using wider ones for wider drawers/cabinets?

Wow you have done very well with Google Sketchup.
How wide are the overhead cabinets?
All the widths are good
I would use different length handles on different cabinets.

Looking good

Your opinion homesweet home is worth lots...

now I just love that sketch up thisisme and I can see you are getting your lovely streamlined galley style kitchen with island so big you can sleep on it LOL......

I think you can vary sizes of handles.............beware sometimes those long ones can catch on clothing...

How did you go with cabinet maker.............were you able to negotiate a great price? Any tips you can share.............how long will it take to get it all built?

Thank you so much girls!!!

Julie-Ann, the width of the overhead cabinets is just under 300mm (just under half the width of the 900mm cooktop). I will check the measurements when I get home tonight.

So with the handles, they have to be in proportion to the width of the drawers/cabinets, correct? Would you usually work out the width from the end of the handle to the end of the cabinet/drawer, and keep that consistant throughout the kitchen?

We weren't able to negotiate a cheaper price to the one originally given, but we were pretty happy with it, which is great. We are still a fair way from having the kitchen done, but hopefully some time early next year. Fingers crossed

We hope to have the house finished mid next year.

Thisisme I would actually have 4 doors at 450mm. I think 300mm is too skinny. In kitchens I like things to be substantial proportions so it looks expensive. I hope that helps.

Thanks J-A

That's how I originally had it drawn but then thought it wouldn't line up with the bottom drawers so changed it. I will change it back

Even for a symmetrical person like me they don't have to line up with the bottom drawers.
