Default Ready, Set, Dissect - Boy's Dorm Room

What do you think of Ikea's version of a Boy's Dorm Room at University? Mr18 says it is unrealistic as his bedroom is likely to be half this size. But apart from the size what do you think of the decor? There is a lot to fit in to a university student's bedroom - do you think they have included all the student will need?
Get ready, set, let's dissect this Boy's Dorm Room.

Hi J-A

My niece has just spent three years living in college at the University of Qld. One item she found essential was a small fridge in her room for snacks etc. Don't know if this is allowed at ANU colleges.

Hope all the packing etc is going well. My son is coming home for a visit next weekend

PS I am enjoying following the forum on Twitter

Am I following you too on Twitter Lizzie? Be sure to say Hi there so I know it's you. I am glad you are following the forum there. All the new topics go automatically from here to Twitter and then to our FB Page.
You must be so excited to see your boy this weekend Lizzie. The hard thing will be not to smother him with kisses. Enjoy his visit.

We are waiting to see if they are allowed a fridge. We read that this is quite common. I am also hoping he is lucky enough to have a sink in his room. I have told him to send me photos of his room and I will get the talented members of the Decorating Forum to come up with ideas for it. From the photos I have seen of the rooms this could be a huge challenge.

I hope he doesn't want a Billy bookcase, look at the price of them in Sydney http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/ca...ng_room/11683/

I love that photo of the Flat Iron building

My dorm room at uni (UNE) was literally one third of that size. We had a wardrobe (built in), a single bed, a desk with self unit above, and a small set of desk drawers. All you need is a place for books and your computer....this room looks like a small apartment!! You definitely don't need a TV, nice lamp, lounge chair etc...it's really just a place to sleep and occasionally study. Agreed a small fridge is handy, but it's not essential that's for sure

Hi Freddofrog welcome to the Decorating Forum. Maybe dorm rooms are bigger in Sweden. I think the people from Ikea haven't been in many dorm rooms. Did you have common rooms at your university college? That seems to be where most students hang out.

Thanks Julie-Ann, nice to be here!! Yes we had common rooms and that's definitely where we spend a fair bit of time. Also the colleges had really nice grassy outdoor courtyards which were pretty popular. The rooms were very basic, that's for sure.

Yes so basic that I am not sure how you make look anything like the picture. So now you have graduated and you have your own space - are you planning any decorating projects?

I do love the skyline print - perfect for a young man's bedroom. And the Expedit desk and bookcase is a great use of space. But as you have said the rest of the room is not likely to exist in a real dorm room. Oh well - there's no Ikea in Canberra anyway. How do Canberra people survive???

Well its a point of pride for us to live somewhere without an IKEA - also it gives us an excuse to go to Sydney if we need to and it puts us in that frame of mind. I find IKEA a necessary evil.

The largest IKEA in the Southern Hemisphere has just opened up across the road from the street I used to live in in Sydney - so I am well glad to be away from it frankly (mind you my neighbour and I had evil plans of signing our kids into the ballpit and leaving them there for the day as free childcare!)
