Do you like the padded bedheads that are so popular now. Here is a simple way to make your own.
I used old doors for this project. You could pick a door up from a salvage yard or even on your bulk rubbish collection day. If you can't get an old door you will just need a solid piece of MDF.
Cut the door or wood to the size you require. I like the bedhead to be the same width as the top of the bed. To see how it will look you can tape newspaper the size of the bedhead to the wall. This will help you decide on the height.
Purchase some foam and some dacron (wadding). The foam should be the same measurements as the door/mdf. The dacron needs to wrap around the door and the foam - so it should be the same measurements as the door+ for each of the 4 sides add the thickness of the door + the thickness of the foam +30 cms. I found the foam at a local store so look up the yellow pages to find one near you.
Purchase some material just a little bigger than the dacron.
I used faux suede from Spotlight. It is easy to keep clean. I would also avoid a pattern as it would be a lot harder to do.
Glue the foam onto the door. Use a good quality glue from the hardware store.
Now comes the fun bit - you will need a staple gun and staples. Mine was about $25 from Bunnings.
Lay the dacron on the floor. Position the door with the foam on the bottom over the dacron. Make sure the door is centred. Stretch the dacron around the foam and the door and staple on to the back of the door.
TIP: Do 1 staple in the middle of all 4 sides first to hold the dacron in place.
The corners are the trickiest bit. I did a hospital style corner to try to keep it neat. But it is just a bit of fiddling around.
Repeat this step with the material.
And voila
To hang them on the wall my DH screwed some picture framing on the wall and some on to the back of the bed but this time it was upside down. so when you placed the bedhead on to the wall the 2 pieces of picture framing locked into each other. I was worried this was not going to hold or fall off easily but it hasn't after 3 years
Do you think you would give this a go?
It's a great way to use up old doors
