Living Room Layout help
Hi Everyone
I desperately need some help with my Lounge room layout. Our lounge room is large 8m x 5m with high ceilings and sliding doors all the way along one wall. We've always wanted to create 2 separate areas in the room. So my husband fell in love with some chairs which we have now added to the room and it just doesn't seem to work. I'm not really sure what to do with it.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Christa

Hi Christa welcome to the Decorating Forum . The chairs are stunning. I am sure we can make them work with the room. Can you just show us what is on the wall opposite the TV?
By the way I love you light fitting .

Hi Julie-Ann--Thanks for the welcome! Opposite the TV is a large archway opening to the dining room.

I am so silly - I can see that in the mirror .
We need to create a space you can use. You can create a reading area or a games playing area or a study area. What do you think your family would use the most? Do you have any other living areas in the house? Do you have kids and what age? I like spaces to be not only decorative but practical - hence all the questions.

If you want to divide it the way you have it I would suggest a console table at the back of the couch so it doesn't look like it has its backside facing into the room. I would move the white chairs away from the wall and find a little side table to put between them. Hmm I need to re-look at the pictures to see whats opposite where the white chairs will be.

aah I seem to have lost my last reply (maybe it will appear)
But I have another thought - I would think about moving the tv to the wall and the left - that way your lovely mirror isn't en***bered - it might give you more options with grouping the sofas and chairs that way - I think you may still need a console table behind a sofa - hmm thats probably not going to work as it bunches the furniture too close to the arch and may impede your access -
My main thoughts with living rooms is - do not push your furniture against the walls if possible -
you could pair the armchairs with a lamp between them

ok ok - third time lucky - I wish I could just draw what I think on a piece of paper but I'm not going to try doing it on a computer.\
Looking again I see the door on the left is actually closer to where the tv is as opposed to where the arch is - so I think my thoughts on the last point may work.
Try the tv on the left wall - swivel the couch around with its backside facing into the room (get a cheap white console table - I bought one once for $80 from Freedom) stick it behind couch - move the couch with its backside to the windows down so it faces the tv
In the section where your mirror is place your armchairs with a pedestal lamp and get some small side tables -drum stool size would be ideal.
Have the rug under the furniture rather than lying uncovered as it is.
You have lovely pieces so you just need a bit of jiggling around and a few accessories.

CLP - I had thought of moving the TV to the wall on the left too. I will need to convince my husband to try it. Would you leave the big painting on the wall with the TV?
Julie-Ann, we really want to create a reading area. The kids (aged 9 and 4) have a toy room and a music room elsewhere so don't really need to use the room for anything more than family TV time.
This is great as I don't really trust my own design instincts (actually not sure I have any natural design instinct!!).

If power & tv points weren't an issue or you are happy to get an electrician, I would swap the 2 areas around.
Because of the doorway location being closer to the wall with the mirror, the area with the sofas looks a bit like it could become a thoroughfare but I think this wouldn't matter if the 2 chairs were against the wall with the mirror making a nice sitting/reading area, put a small table in between & you can then take advantage of the view through the 3 large windows whilst reading. Then move the TV to the wall with the painting but from the photos I can't tell where to move the painting to, then have the sofas in an L shape or facing each other. I'm not so bothered about needing a sofa table but add one if you like the look.
I know this isn't what you wanted but if you arranged the sofas how you have them now but in the space where the 2 chairs are then have the 2 chairs under the mirror the 2 areas can then also work as one space, the chairs will still be separate because of the walk through area but still close enough to be included in the sitting area when people visit. I think this is similar to what CLP last suggested just the other way around.
