Question Living Room Colours??

Hi everyone. Really need some advice on choosing colorus to decorate my new living room.

I have already ordered the lounge. If you see the picture attached it is the same but in 100% black leather. Then the next picture is of the feature wall. In the centre ther will be a 60" TV mounted (which i persobnally think is too big but H2B "had to have it"), then in each side im going to get custom bookshelves made and also a custom tv cabinet below the TV in the centre section. This room is also having a large silver and crystal chandelier.

I really need help choosing what colour to do for the custom made bookshelves and tv cabinet. I will also need to find a buffet an coffee table and side tables to compliment. I was thinking white because the lounge is black but thought that might be a bit boring? I would love something a bit different but just cant seem t fin anything. I would greatly appreciate any opinions.

Also would love opinions/advice on an accent colour/s for cushions, throw rugs, floor rugs, decorative items on bookshelf etc and also some sort of art work or mirror to go above the lounge.

I know its a lot at once guys, im sorry, but im going to adelaide Friday and may not get another chance to go again for a while so want to buy up big!!

Hi AmandaLouise we need a "Jumping Off" point for this room. Something to give direction to the colours to be used. Is there a piece of art, or a cushion or ornament that you really would like to use in this room? Or a favourite colour?

Hi J-A,

The only things I have purchased for the room at this stage are a candlestick holder, chandelier and a mirror, in the pictures below. I was thinking maybe yellow or purple for the accent colour. Im looking for a modern look with a bit of a french elegant look to it too. Below are some pictures of rooms I like. I also like the idea of picture shelves above the lounge (what do you think of that?).

Hi AmandaLouise I love your mirror. Where did you get it from?
I think yellow or purple will work beautifully. I would probably go with purple as it is a little more feminine. The french style is also more feminine.
I am not sure about shelves above the sofa. Can you show us a picture of where you are thinking of putting them?
I am wondering if you should do the TV cabinet and coffee table in black. French furniture can look stunning in a satin black. Maybe add a French chair in black. Then we can introduce purple in a the chairs upholstery, a rug, cushions, art and ornaments.

Believe it or not I got the mirror from a market in Adelaide for only $20!!!

The only problem is J-A that I have already purchased the large black leather lounge suite (H2B's choice) so cant fit another chair in the room without it looking crouded, and its not exactly french sytle. Thats why I was looking to incorpare modern and french together, thats also why I was worried about getting black furniture because with the black lounge I thought there would be too much black.

Everything else sounds great though. I have attached a picture of the photo shelves I was talking about. theres only a thin shelf with a ledge to keep the frames on.

This is the other side of the room with the wall the lounge would be up against. This photo was taken before the floors were polished.

Do you have to have the sofas against the wall to fit them in? I do prefer them to be off the walls, even if just by a foot. I do love those shelves and they look gorgeous.
Have a read of this article on mixing traditional and contemporary styles. It might help to direct you.
So your space is quite modern and the sofa is modern. Then we need to add some traditional accents. If not with a chair - what about making the book shelves in a traditional style like the 2 below. Then keeping the TV unit and coffee table very plain so as to make the bookcases stand out.
As for the colour I would prefer painted to natural for a French look. If you do white you will need to add lots of white to the accessories as well to tie the 2 together. If you do black furniture the purple and white will pop against it.
Do you like zebra rugs?

Yes I love zebra rugs and black and white striped rugs.

Yes theres no reason why we cant have the lounge off of the wall a foot.

Do you have any examples of coffee tables, side tables and a buffet?

So you think these picture ledges will suit the style and look ok with a chandelier? The Chandelier is in the centre of the room and hangs about 60cm from the ceiling.

Do you have a picture of the chandelier?
For ideas on coffee tables and TV units I have attached photos. I would keep them as plain as possible so the bookcases pop. No modern silver handles and bits.
