Well his bday is mid June and I was trying to hold out till then before assembling the new bed. BUT the new bed has arrived and is sitting in boxes in his room already and it's too tempting for me.

Having said that, the new mattress hasn't arrived (any day now).

But I'm tempted to put his bed up and have him in it before his bday now...

Why not look at it as having the room finished by his birthday. To be finished on time you would have to start now - right???

I like how you think JA!!

We'd like to get my FIL up soon, he's 80 and had some rough news this week, and he likes to keep busy to keep his mind off things. He hung the wallpaper in DD's room and is a tad hand at painting too, so we'd like to invite him up to stay with us for a few days and give him something to do!

Better get onto finalising what I want then huh?! No pressure!

Well JA, I got all excited and today we assembled the bed. Very long story short, the bed is assembled but DS still has his cot in his room and is sleeping in that tonight. lol

I played around with the bed layout, there are really only 3 positions for it to go. Sketches below:

The 1st sketch looks the best as the window on the top wall is a high window and the bed is centred under it, this layout definately looks the most balanced in the room BUT this means is there hardly any floor space either side of the bed for DS to play. And I don't think a feature wall would look any good on the wall with the high window.

The 2nd sketch was what I had in mind originally with my striped feature wall along the one wall that doesn't have windows or doors through it. But I don't like entering the room to see the side of the dresser there (which you also see from the kitchen looking down the hallway). Pro of this is that there is alot more floor space having the bed pushed up against the corner of the room.

The 3rd sketch also has good floor space, but I don't like the bed facing the door

What would you do??

PS, the door to the right is the main door to the room. The door on the left is a wardrobe door. The dresser does not fit along the wall inbetween the 2 doors (if it did that would make life so much easier!). The dresser is the smaller blue rectangle (it is fairly large though and full tallboy height). The narrower rectangler is a low bookshelf (hence under the larger window as nothing else will go here)

How about the bed where the bookcase is with the tallboy to the right of it. Then the bookcase on the right wall near the entry door. Because a bookcase isn't as deep as a tallboy it won't be as obvious from the hall. And this way gives lots of floor space.
Although I don't know about doing the right side wall as a feature wall because it is not the first or even second wall you see when you enter the room. Maybe some patterned bedlinen instead. What do you think though?

Never even thought of that layout JA, will move stuff around this morning and see what it looks like. Thanks!

I really like that striped feature wall, but it would only look any good on a full wall without windows/doors wouldn't it? So I think it has to go on the right wall...or no feature wall at all. I agree it's not the ideal wall for a feature wall, but probably the only wall I can do something large on.

Depends on which wall the bedhead ends up against I guess - that will determine where everything else goes.

It's an ackward little room with so many windows and doors! Will be interesting working with such a small space after working in DD's room which is about double the size!

Any helpful tips from anyone about working in smaller spaces?

I remember seeing Nate Berkus on Oprah doing a makeover on a ultra small apartment and he said the key was to use bigger pieces of furniture, most people use small pieces of furniture in a small space. I thought that was interesting, his bigger pieces looked great...will see if I can find a pic of his room...oh bettter yet, here's a blog about the makeover!

http://cleverful.blogspot.com/2010/0...-makeover.html

I like his idea of having an oversized large piece of artwork as it doesn't take up valueable floor space. I could put something really large on the right wall, a large wall decal or picture. Or maye still have my stripes on the wall in a large frame or something?

OK, done some moving around this morning, here's what it looks like in the layout you suggested JA.

Is there where you meant the bed to go?

What do you think? (excuse the mess)

Looks like a great use of space and your son has quite a space now to play in. I only read this thread today so sorry for late input. I would maybe put a rug in that open space b/w bookcase, tallboy and bed and I am not sure a feature wall is needed...

BTW that 1st Nate Berkus makeover remains my absolute favourite....how he got it to look anything but cluttered is the wonder of "Nate" I bow down to king Nate......I just loooooooooooooove Nate

Yes that was what I meant UG. Do you like it? It looks good in the photos.
I agree a large piece of art above the bookcase would be stunning. But no wall seems right for a feature wall. I also love the idea of a colourful rug for Mr3.

Oh by the way if you think the room is messy- wait until Mr3 becomes a teenager
