Default Lets talk Carpet!

So, i need some carpet tips. We've got our 3 bedrooms that require carpet. I had a quick looksie at a place earlier and going to check out another this arvo. I hate how dark carpets show light fluff and light carpets show dark fluff...so i quite like the fleck designs. Could you get away with a fairly dark grey with white flecks without making the rooms feel too small...we've got 1/4 beige royal walls and natural light in all rooms.... thoughts? I dont want browns or creams...prefer greys this time around.

We got quite a dark grey colour for our bedrooms and it looks great - it was only a problem when I had new white flannelette sheets which put fluff everywhere but most of the time it looks pretty good. I'll just have to remember what we got!

I often use a colour called Cinnamon. It looks coffee colour if you have brown tones near it or medium grey if you have grey tones near it. The only problem I have had is the same as Clp from flannelette sheets.
What about the type of carpet? I always buy a cut twist pile as I find it doesn't get flattened easily and brushes back up with a quick vacuum. I also recently purchased a carpet that is a solution dyed nylon carpet - it doesn't stain and doesn't bleach. You can see my post on it here. I would spend the extra dollars to get this great quality carpet.

I was pricing SDN this morning, it'd be about $1200 for the 3 rooms fully installed. My husband is however thinking of installing it himself to save us the $$. We had very flat, rough (probably the bottom line of carpet) in our last home and this time we wanted some much more softer under foot. There was a beautiful dark grey with white flecks through it...$215 layed per lineal.

Do you know what the price is per square metre Lizzy?
If you want soft under foot I would recommend you spend a little extra on the underlay too.
I used to hate carpet because it looked flat and would stain. I am now converted and would happily put carpet in most of our next house. I would keep wood in some areas like halls and dining and kitchen as it adds to resale and you don't want carpet there anyway. But a good carpet I think is more durable than wood.
Then get yourself a little robot vacuum cleaner and put your feet up

It was $54 per sq. The place i went this morning i only went to compare prices, the place we'll be buying from always upgrade the underlay thankfully and give us a good deal. I just got back from them now, and i'm meeting them later this week up at our house.

Wow that's a great price. Is that for a solution dyed nylon carpet?

We had a mid to deep grey at the last house and it looked pretty good most of the time. I think if there is an issue..like fluffy sheets... fluffing.. then it is going to show up. I liked that the grey disappeared... It made the room feel bigger. We have a dark brown (I would say same depth of colour but in brown) and it shows everything.... i would def be looking at grey carpet when we build.

I would also have someone lay it. The owners of the last house did it themselves..as they have done for all 20+ rentals they have built.. So I would say they are relatively experienced at it.. it was OK. but it was never quiet right.. and it got a run in it.. another room frayed at the door... they didnt clip the edges quite right etc.. the carpet guys had to come back and redo one section for them.. it was ANNOYING as they had to stretch it which meant taking everything out of the room. It might be cheaper and easier to have it laid for you?

Yes that SDN. It adds up to $1995 layed for 3 rooms..thats about $1000 over budget!

I agree, i'd prefer to have it layed coz i dont want it stuffing up in a few months etc and have to move all the furniture out.

And I don't think having it installed adds too much - most places I went for carpets quoted it as fully installed. Must remember what we got as it was lovey quality.
