Oh no what have I started here
We rented a double storey last year and I have to confess I did throw a few things down mostly doona covers and towels. The laundry door was just underneath so it was easy to throw everything downstairs
mjm that's so funny

My daughter has two built in laundry hampers in her newly renovated laundry.
This is an idea I'm going to copy in my next build.

So Milena the truth comes out.
The problem with the tossing the washing down the stairs is if anything with zips damages the wood or glass or any painted surface. Of course a laundry chute is ideal but often doesn't work because of the locations of the relevant rooms.
We will have to ask the online world to help us with this one

No Julie-Ann honestly my cousin told me about it and I picked it up from her
I never thought about the zips and I can't do that in my next house because there will be a wall so I won't be able to throw anything from the top

When our bedrooms were upstairs I used to throw things down the stairs too...oops.

Now our bedrooms are on the ground floor, same as the laundry, and we have a hamper in our bedroom. I can see the advantage in having built-in-hampers in the laundry if everything is going to be pre-sorted. As long as everyone in the household actually does it, it will work well.

Thank you all

I think I will go with both. Portable hampers in each of the bedrooms AND built in sorting hampers in the laundry

Sorry to bring up an old thread *shy*

Would love to hear more thoughts on this, as our laundry design is still in progress *shy*

Does anyone know if this "bag" comes out? I'd hope so... as I wouldn't want to be carrying the whole thing up and down the stairs all the time :S

No it doesn't come out easily Thisisme. The bottom is attached with velcro. But to undo the top you have to unscrew the pole at the top. Gorgeous looking though.
I thought we agreed you were just going to throw the clothes over the balustrade. Could we put a nice looking laundry hamper as a feature at the bottom of the stairs. Then you could just throw the clothes directly into it from upstairs. Sorry I am in a silly mood today.

I lived in a three story house.. washing was a pest.

bedrooms on top. laundry on middle level.. line on the bottom level!

I feel like i have cracked the laundry hamper thing here! AT LAST... no prizes for guessing it was an IKEA solution LOL

Ikea Antonius. I bought the taller slider shelf cabinet
http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/90177631

and three of these

http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/80177603

The top one has lights, the second one has darks and the third one has heavily soiled clothing (or delicates/woolens) (or towels) depending how your family live and their needs.

You simply slide the basket out and carry it (easily because it isnt HUGE or heavy!).. to the washing machine. A full basket is a full load in a 7 / 8 kg washer.

NO more sorting laundry. You have a basket to carry that has handles and isnt a nightmare. You can safely do stairs etc. You even have a basket ready to use to hang the clothes or take them to the dryer etc.

It is plastic, it doesnt smell and is easily wiped over! Socks and bits don't go missing and it fits into a bathroom or WIR easily. I find putting the hamper where the people get naked is key to them putting it in the hamper. NOT very likely that someone will shower and change and carry their clothes downstairs and file them accordingly, in a cupboard. ?? or your family can come and train my family LOL

I find the boys will put their clothes in the right hamper when there is only two choices tho.
