Default Home Beautiful Kitchen Feature

Have you bought the March issue of Home Beautiful? They have a great feature on Kitchens this month. They feature 50 new kitchens - the designs, the appliances, the finishes and the looks that last.. If you are considering designing a new kitchen any time soon I would highly recommend this issue.

Do you have any other Kitchen books or magazines that you love or would recommend?

I have to say I was rather disappointed in this feature - it reminded me of so many kitchen mags - some fairly ordinary kitchens and as always its only the finishes that get mentioned - personally I think discussion on layout and function is way more important than colours etc which is highly personal - and frankly everyone knows what you can get counters made in these days.

Are there many really small kitchens in it? If there are I will totally get it. I usually find that kitchen mags are full of kitchens that are bigger than the entirety of any apartment Im ever likely to own, so I don’t really bother. But would love to see a good sample of really small kitchens and any great ideas they have for making the spaces more functional etc.

LDH 90% of them are large kitchens. There are about 3 that are small but not exciting. Are you planning on making any changes to the kitchen in your apartment? One of the best kitchens I ever had was in a kitchen that was too small for 2 people. It was just very well designed.

Im planning on changing everything! ... One day. But yes the kitchen is high on the priorities list (by that i mean, probably in the next 2 years). I collect images whenever i see a small kitchen that has clever use of space. I think two burner stoves are good for small kitchens - who needs 4 burners if you only have enough space to entertain 4 people anyhow! And a sink that is recessed into the bench top so bench space isnt wasted on the sink surrounds. My total area is 1.75 x 1.75m so its pretty small! but its enough to fit an L shaped kitchen or maybe a galley kitchen with narrow benches on one side - not sure. As every, i always keep an eye out for inspiration!

You could still have a 4 burner but with the glass top (perfectly flat) so it can be used as bench space when not being used for cooking. I had one and did that when not in use.

And an undermount sink is ideal as a dish drainer can be put away when finished with.

Good idea with the glass top Di. Did you see those single burners I featured this week? They might work for you.
Also check out a kitchen hardware showroom like Hettich or Blum. You will amazed at all the gadgets they have to make the most of the space you have in the kitchen. Some of my favourites are Lazy Susan's in corners and a drawer inside a drawer.

My first kitchen was tiny and, apart from having to shimmy past the oversized fridge to get through the door (which provided me with the valuable lesson that i should measure the space before buying the item ) it was very user friendly. More user friendly than some of the large kitchens i've had.

One great idea was pull out table at the end of the galley. I just used to get it out when i needed extra work top and then it went away to make accessing the units next to it easy.
