I would go with the primer. You will have to do 3 coats of paint either way but the primer is more likely to prevent the marks returning.Did you say Solver suggested it to you? As long as they are sure it will cover the marks because as Stormy says they are very difficult to cover, then go for that.
I hope it doesn't rain anymore for you. Just blow it all to the West so we don't get tougher water restrictions.

Thanks stormy

Luckily, they didn't get wet, just picked up some of the moisture (from the air maybe???). The stains arent very noticable. They are maybe 1.5cm wide .. on just two sides of the sheets (if that makes sense). These are only the upstairs eaves, so even if the stains stay, they probably won't be seen from downstairs.

I just hope Boral gets their act together and finishes the roof tomorrow. It's going to rain on Wednesday again

Hi thisisme,

I just thought I'd post my water damaged and stained eaves to show you.

This one was taken on 4th July 2009. The roof scaff had gone, but they hadn't replaced all the tiles, so when it rained, it rained straight on the inside of my eaves....leaving this:

...and this is the stain as of today, which has slowly become darker as time progresses:

It's being repainted with a stain blocking paint as part of my 12 month maintenance, thankfully! Now assuming the painter did the 'correct' thing, I'm guessing the eaves sheeting would have had some sort of exterior primer painted onto them before the top coat (white). Unless a stain blocking primer is used, then this will continue to leach through the paint.

Just keep a close eye on the underside of the eaves, especially now they are up and rain is forecast again. I hope your roof is finished too! Mine 'looked' finished for ages, but the roof scaff was still up...which meant tiles off in places and wet eaves!

Fingers crossed for you!

Thank you all for your advice and support!!!

I am pleased to say that our roof was finished yesterday. Yay!!! So now, even if it does rain we should be ok

The only thing left to do now is mask and paint almost 50 linear metres of eaves

Here they are

Now, I know you can't see the roof in this pic, but it is black. What colour would you recommend for downpipes? We are thinking black to match it to the roof and gutters. Or should we perhaps match it to the fascia/windows? We going to paint the eaves the same colour as windows...

So glad to hear the roof is finished before more rain came.
What about painting the downpipes a red colour to match your bricks- so they blend in?

Thanks Julie-Ann
Will run it past my man. Our bricks are rustic and not a uniform colour (boral jarrah). I guess you would recommend a colour that there is the most of, right?

Do you have an iphone or ipad Thisisme? You could use the Dulux app to find just the right colour. But if not then I would try to match the most dominant colour in the brick.

I ran it past my man and he is not keen on red downpipes
He was originally thinking cream (to match our windows and fascia) but is now leaning towards black (to match the roof and guttering). I am however affraid that black will stand out too much, as we've got two on both sides of the inner (indented) part of the face of the house... if that makes sense
I wish we didn't have to have downpipes in the front of the house
