Default Hamptons style Bi Folds

Our living area has 10 ft ceilings and the plan shows 2.4m high bifold doors with a glass panel within the glass of the door to tie in the the Hamptons look. I am trying to decide whether to have the doors 2.1 with a seperate transom on top rather than have the glass panel actually in the door. The benefits of having the doors 2.4 high are that the opening would look bigger when the doors are opened up but then the detail on the top would not be seen when the doors are opened up. I hope that makes sense

Which do you think looks better. I have attached some perspectives of the house as well as a picture of bifold doors with transoms.

Actually you made perfect sense.
I think if the transom is separate to the doors it will look more of a traditional space. If the transom is part of the door when the doors are open will look spectacular because they are so tall but it will give a clean and contemporary look. So you have to decide between the traditional look against the larger opening.

Thanks JA. I am not so sure what to do. I am not wanting the home to be too traditional but more of a casual Hamptons look. Light coloured timber floors, white handrails, shutters on windows etc.

I do love the look of the seperate transoms though, particularly on a large opening.

Decisions , decisions !!!!!!

I think if you love transoms, you should go with them separate to the sliding doors. They are Hampton's while the alternative is not and that is the look you are trying to achieve.

I'm sure A-M won't mind me posting this pic from her old house:

And this room is gorgeous:

Oh, you also mentioned bi-folds in the title of this thread.

Are you having bi-folds, French doors or triple sliders?

We were going to have bi-folds but after pricing them and then actually thinking about just how many times they would be wide open, we decided to go with triple sliders.

Just a thought since they are so much more expensive.

The plan shows bifolds. There are double hung windows on the ends and then 6 bifold doors in the middle with them opening three to each side. The reason we wanted the bifolds is that we have extensive water views from the living area and wanted an open space when the doors were fully opened. French doors and sliders wouldnt be able to achieve this.

We have triple sliders and they do not impede the view when closed or open. I'll post a pic later on for you if you like?

I'd go the transom if you are having windows either side as you can extend the transom along the top of the windows.

Some quick snaps complete with sloth on the lounge and mess. The doors slide in behind each other. I hope you don't think I am being pushy, I 'm just tying to be helpful since I know from experience that bifolds were almost twice the price of triple sliders and being able to open them fully still gives the same effect except for the last panel at each end.

Excuse the blue tape - I'm about to do the last coat of colour to the outside and then break into a happy dance!
