Default Ginger bread house and men...recipe!

Hi Guys

Kind of desperate here but has anybody got a really good recipe or suggestion for ginger bread houses and men.

My DS3 loves ginger bread men so Mr B wants to make him a ginger bread house for Christmas The only poblem is that a lot of recipes dont taste that nice although they may look good. I was just hoping that someone here has a really nice kid friendly recipe for ginger bread. We were going to buy one of those kits from a shop but I dont think they will taste the best.

Has any body got a suggestion/recipe you dont mind sharing ?

Mrs B

Another vote for Ikea's house..

I dont like gingerbread but everyone else seems to enjoy it (i kinda stick to eating the freckles we buy for the roof LOL)

Green's have a kit gingerbread man.. (cake section of supermarket) can't speak to the taste tho

Thanks for the replies so far

Ikea...never would of thought they would have it LOL I am just a bit wary of kits as SIL tried the Cosco one last year and no one could eat it. I think its going to be that we just have to try a few before we get the taste we are after.

Mrs B

ps DS3 only likes the little ginger bread men from the Borders coffee shop

I did see the Ikea gingerbread house and it looked yummy.
But how about you buy lots of gingerbread men from Borders and make this wreath? You might be able to join all the men together at their hands and feet with icing. At least DS3 will love it

Holy thread revival batman!

How did you go? Ive made a few of these. I brought the cutters from kmart, but its easy to draw a template and cut around them.

I can have a look for my recipe if you still want one. Its a bit bland on its own, but that is what all the candy is for! I think construction gingerbread is supposed to be a bit different to gingerbread man gingerbread.

I make an edible centrepiece for my partner's family christmas each year. If you are curious here is a link to my facebook album: Darkbyte's Yearly Christmas Creations

Aww thankyou. They are good fun, but the kids are getting a bit old for it and the adults think its childish.. bah!

There are a few tricks to making them. I have yelled for help a few times, the roof tends to collapse. Dont try putting the roof on, until the walls have set! If you do, you will be standing there for about half hour trying to hold it all together!

Its best to decorate it before you put it together. That was the first mistake I made, nothing like chocolate buds sliding off the roof!

I use licorish all sorts in the corners of the house (inside), so that I can keep it square. They work really well when you glue them to the board with royal icing.

I brought some mini skewers, they help to hold things together. If they are thin enough you wont break the biscuit, when its set, you can "glue" a smartie over it afterwards.

They are good fun to make, but they will take an entire day to do. DONOT start on christmas eve! I usually bake two days before, and pop it in the freezer so it doesnt go stale. Decorate it the day before. Then it gets destroyed the next day.

The important thing to remember, is not to put it in the fridge, because the royal icing and candy sweats.

Make sure you have someone on hand to help you, especially when attaching the roof!!
