Thanks ladies <3

Your responses are making me think that I am just not cut out for fabric sofas and should just stick to leather

TIM, you have a modern/contemporary home and leather is the perfect fit for that.

For me with an older, classic styled home (don't know what other term to use, sorry, but I think you know what I mean), a leather lounge just does not suit. Hubby was desperate for leather and I thought about it for a long time but they're all just too modern for me. He wanted bright orange or lime green - would have looked great alongside our kitchen, not.

Sounds like leather will suit you perfectly if you anti****te sweaty/dirty guests anyway.

Thanks Di. Mr Thisisme wants all our sofas to be leather but I would prefer fabric
Also because we would not want to get average quality leather - they are very very expensive. Which I would be ok with ... Providing that the amount we pay for them is directly proportional to the number of years we will keep them and I won't get bored of them

By the way, I am by no means saying that fabric sofas can't be very expensive.

As most peoples guests don't seem to be dirty/sweaty I'm assuming Mr TIM will have friends around tinkering with cars in his workshop so Mr TIM will be getting dirty/sweaty out there as well.

You have the bathroom downstairs so let guests know they can bring a change of clothes & take a shower, keep a pile of guest towels (maybe not white) so Mr TIM can give them one when they have finished working & suggest they have a shower & clean up before you have lunch/dinner or whatever. If Mr TIM takes a shower after working outside then guests who may be reluctant to may eventually take the hint, you could even make a comment about having enough bathrooms so they can bring a change of clothes next time & freshen up

If in & out of the workshop/garden or you have children visiting keep the 'mess' contained to the alfresco & family/kitchen/meals areas, a leather sofa gives here gives you the easy clean you want. Also if this is the area you concentrate on furnishing first guests will be used to casual socialising here & dirty/sweaty guests are unlikely to suddenly go & sit in the formal areas once you furnish that area, unless invited to. Your casual area is a lovely space so I doubt any guests will feel they are being banished to the back room because they are not clean.

As you are furnishing 3 living areas I think you can stick to your guns & get a fabric sofa in the front living room.

I will also put in a vote for macro suede, mine are a darker colour & so easy to keep clean.

Thank you Sooty!!!

I think that's what I'm going to do! Leather sofa in the family room and fabric in the sitting room

I've had both fabric and also leather sofas. I find it much more relaxing with the 9 grandies and Dh to have leather in the family room. I found it very hard to keep the fabric sofas clean.
In your formal room the fabric sofas would look great.
