Default Discounts on items when you buy a large amount.

Does anyone have any experience on the sort of discounts a Company will give you if you purchase a decent amount of things from their store.

I have found a nice place for bathroom, kitchen and laundry stuff and I was wondering what sort of discount I should be expecting. I have chosen
'most' of the items we need for the house and sending the list tomorrow to get a quote from him. A few items will be purchased from a Harvey Norman or Domayne 'showroom' with showroom prices - we kept this to a minimum though.

For example, if the items add up to 10k, what should I expect? What about 15k? Do they give 10-20% off total amount or am I expecting too much lol.

I think a lot will depend on how hard you bargain Newhome. How ruthless a negotiator are you?
As a designer most shops give a 10% discount. Some suppliers only 5% and others up to 15%. Occasionally some give no discount. So I would aim for 10%.

By all means give it a go. It all depends on the item, some they are able to give you a bigger discount on than other items.

My personal experience with getting a discount based on quantity hasn't been that great. I've managed to get on average 15% off, which to me isn't significant at all.

Shopping around on the other hand has paid off for me. But it all comes down to how many hassles you are prepared to go through. Eg. Do you mind spending hours emailing and phoning different suppliers? Do you mind picking the items up separately or do you want them all delivered in one load?

Just to give you an idea ...

A few weeks ago I was shopping around for a Caroma wall faced toilet suite. RRP just over $1000. One place gave me a price of $900 each for 4 suites. Another place gave me a price of around $800 or so. That same shop but in a different location gave me a super low price of just over $650 and that's if I even get just one!!!

Maybe it just comes down to whom you speak to and if they are in a good mood at the time

Great advice as usual guys! Thanks.

I'm not good at bargaining and my Fiance is even worse :-(.

The guy at the Shop said he will give a great price if we buy all our
stuff from there. I'm thinking I let him give me his great price, then
try and bargain a bit more! I have also looked at other stores with online products
and I can see a few things I want cheaper (the pics are exactly the
same) and they are cheaper by about $30-70 each for taps (some of them).

I'm hoping the fact his shop is amongst about 20 other ones that sell
the same stuff will force him to give us a good deal, or I'll just go to
the place next door.

I'm thinking with a 10k+ purchase you should be accepting no less than a 10% discount myself, I'm sure retail price would have a lot more than 10% added onto the wholesale price so they will still be making a profit at the end of the day. However, I don't negotiate either, but I think you are in a good bargaining position with spending that amount of money.

He got back to us quickly. It's a 10% discount. I'm hoping to try and get a few more hundred $$ off when we go into the Shop with someone who is not emabarrassed to bargain(my dad lol).

Good idea to take your Dad NewHome.
Maybe before hand ring around and see if any specific items are cheaper elsewhere. Then you can ask for a bigger discount say on the toilets because the shop across the road is selling them for $200 less.
Good luck - let us know how you go

I cannot comprehend that this thread was made over a year ago :-( My build is taking so long!

We are going with Harvey Norman for all our taps, sinks, baths and so on.... and the guy said he will match any pice, so now I have to go and get quotes from other Harvey Norman's as they are all franchised! This is going to take forever and I am so over it.

He gave us the normal advertised discounts that you would get if you bought 1 item. I'm buying for a whole house! Anyways, so now I have to go and get more quotes -
I'm going to go from one Harvey Norman to another and ask them if they can beat the previous quotation. Is that normal? lol.

FYI first quotation was 10% (like you said Julie-Ann) BUT it was only the normal sale prices or advertised discount that everyone can get.
