Default Designing a Laundry

We seem to have been chatting a lot about the laundry this week. And by coincidence the Home magazine of the Sunday Times featured an amazing laundry. I managed to scan this image for our non WA members. This laundry is by a builder Residential Attitudes and its ergonomic features have been a major attraction of their display home.

So what are some of the factors to keep in mind when designing your dream laundry?

1. What do you use your laundry for? The washing, the pets, storage of sporting equipment, an entrance into the house and as such as a mud room? Having room to perform all these functions.

2. Work out the space you will need to do the washing. Where the dirty laundry is stored and sorted. Also decide where the clean washing can be either folded or set aside waiting for the ironing fairy to arrive. To prevent cross contamination it is ideal to try to keep the area for the dirty washing separate from the clean washing.

3. You will need storage for detergents etc. Be sure to make them secure from young children.

4. Many of the functions in the laundry require a good amount of bench space. Having a front loader washing machine under the bench will allow for extra bench space.

5. Overhead cabinets provide extra storage and away from little ones. Be sure to have them high enough to clear the opening of a top loader washing machine’s lid and a little bit extra.

6. Some little extras you might want to consider are built-in ironing boards and drying racks. Extra insulation to the walls and floor of the laundry room will help reduce noise pollution in other areas of the home. And a floor drain is also great protection for the rest of the house in the event a washer hose breaks or the washer overflows.

Is there anything else you would recommend to someone designing a new laundry?

We have 2 deep pot style drawers....lights and darks....a hanging bar for hanging clothes straight out of the dryer or washing machine depending on the items and the need...and a big pull out bin for all the dog food....love it.
The washer and dryer are under bench for extra bench space and we put in a stainless trough to wash out paint brushes etc, as much as I wanted to porcelain....
I think you have covered everything J-A.
