When I was looking at beds for my kids rooms, I saw a single bed with a trundler underneath. I know you aren't looking for trundlers for sleepovers, but the one I saw, the trundler bed actually slid along and out and UP to sit flush against the bed and make a double bed. I thought it was genius! Bit more than a couple of $$ though. But would be a long term investment and go beyond the 5 years you were thinking about. Every teenager loves a double bed! (well I know I did!)

Thank goodness I have you guys to ask... I wa looking at no foot because it made the room seem smaller to me but excellent point about our baby giant outgrowing I sooner. I am happy to go cheaper because it is short term he can't have a Larger bed now..

Ok so I am looking for ... Under $500, dark timber or coloured or white, no foot, could be a mini loft or have storage ... And standard single

Have a look on Buyster. I purchased king single bunk beds for $500 (which can be separated into two beds), so quite cheap. You might be able to find something on there.
