Default Cabinet below TV

I am looking to buy something to go under a wall mounted TV.

It's in an open plan kitchen/dining/living area.

Below the TV is an unattractive array of power points and a ventilation thingy for a gas heater (which we will most likely never use).

We don't need anything to store VCR's or Foxtel box, so don't want a traditional entertainment unit.

I don't really need any storage (ie closed in cupboards/drawers) as I primarily want it to hide the power points and somewhere to display pretty things.

I was thinking of a small timber bookcase. Do you think this may be OK or will it look odd?

Cherylle do you have a picture of what you are thinking? I think you can have something different to a TV unit. Elements and I recently designed a room for a client and we placed a small sideboard under the TV. Apart from hiding your power points a piece of furniture here balances out the TV - so it doesn't just float on the wall.

I have the exact same problem with my TV in my bed/sitting room. The TV looks a bit strange just floating on the wall. I was thinking of something like this bookcase. Perhaps in a different colour though.

Julie-Ann, I only have an image of a bookcase, but I don't really have an image of something I have seen. That's my problem - I'm not exactly sure I know what I want, but I know we need to put something under there - it looks so empty and unfinished.

I thought a bookshelf my be better in my situation, so I have open storage, on which I can display items, rather than a sideboard where (I imagine) there are doors/drawers providing "hidden" storage, IYKWIM.

We have bought a large floor rug, which covers most of the timber floor, so I think a piece of timber furniture will be OK, although I am not opposed to something black.

I have also put an image of a sideboard which has a bit of a mix, which may be a better option.

I think you both are on the right track. Just be careful it is not too high that you have to then have the TV too high. Also make sure it is wider than the TV. Pretty much the same sort of width you would have with a TV unit. Most TV units are around 2mt in length to give you a guide. Let us know what you find.

Well after looking and looking and thinking and thinking, we have finally purchased a piece of furniture to go under the TV in the family room.

It looked a bit sad until I put some books and board games in it, and some things on top - but now I'm really happy with it.

We purchased a rug a little while back, and although the photos don't really show, it has an unusual blue/green colour in it, which I wanted to pick up.

So on the weekend I found the cushions, little bottles and a couple of prints which are all in the same "family". (Even though in the photos the cushions look completely different , they are actually the right colour.)

So that is one room done - well, almost - need to hang prints, and get another couple of cushions.

Cherylle it looks really great. Don't you think it makes the Tv grounded to the rest of the room? And your use of just a few ornaments on top of the cabinet is perfect. I also love your art. I can see how you have pulled that blue colour altogether. Do you like throws? I love the soft texture of a throw rug on the sofa. Maybe you could look for something the colour in the centre of the rug - I think that is a brown. It must be exciting to have a room finished.

Thanks ladies. The rug I bought second hand - one of the mums at school was returning to live in USA so was selling heaps of stuff. Just missed out on her thermomix but got in quick with the rug.
