Default Block-out drapes - in front or behind sheers?

Do you prefer block-out drapes to be in front of behind sheers? And if so why?

For me if I was going to have sheers it would be to have them as the focus inside so I would put sheers over the top and some type of block out behind.

In our movie room Im considering putting sheers (with a bit of shimmer) over the top so they are the focus (hung from the cornice , we have high ceilings) and under that, a holland blind that you wont see from inside (we dont have enough wall either side for drapes).

I do think though that it depends on the look you are trying to achieve as to whether you put the sheers under or over.

I'm not a fan of shears with curtains (hate the word drapes!) as the look too old fashioned for my liking. If using shears but wanting privacy I would have a block-out blind. If I had heavy curtains I would then have a shear blind if needing privacy.

My curtains are lining material & even the block-out is semi-translucent so I still get light but I will have blinds for my large bi-folds, this suits my house & my style.

Personally I prefer curtains over sheers because it frames the window nicely. If the sheers are to enhance the back Fabric curtains like j-a showed in the photos and we discussed in other thread then it's great too.

I like the sheers in front as it gives a very soft and romantic look. But also in white they seem to add light to a room. I like sheers also for privacy but find behind drapes they can look more old fashioned. Just MHO.

Do you think that sheers in front of drapes suit only certain rooms/homes? And if so, which ones?

Sheers in front of block-out blinds or block-out drapes over sheers!

Thanks KL

I am now considering motorised blinds behind sheers as they are soooo much cheaper than motorised curtain tracks.

The only issues are... The arched windows in the front and power points/plugs which will be visible through the sheers ...

But if you are going to have the drapes behind the sheers then you don't really need drapes you just need block out lining. My (cough, cough really dislike this woman) MIL has sheers with block out underneath, you can't see it during the day as it sits close to the wall and gives great blockout from heat, cold and sun.

I have sheers in my formal lounge room with a roller blind behind it. Again you can't see it when it is up and I pull it down at night. This might be a cheaper way to go. Do you really need it to be motorised??
