Default Bentwood chaira

Very excited about this and thought the forum would be a good place to share I have been keeping an eye on ebay etc for a set of bentwood chairs as they seem to be very expensive new and I cant justify spending that amount of cash on dining chairs when I have a perfectly fine set as it is. Anyhow, clicked through to gumtree this morning and was having a look around and there was a set of nicely shaped bentwood chairs that had been given a pretty interesting coat of paint (green, yellow, grey patels shades). Anyhow, i thought i'd go and check them out and probably purchase them as a project for over x-mas, was thinking a nice chocolate, almost black coat of paint would do them the world of good. I hadnt looked at the picture very well but when i turned up to see them they had a lovely patina embossed on the seat which i have seen featured before and just loved. So i purchased them at the bargin asking price ($10 a chair) ... was pretty dark at the time but when i got them home and was stacking them in the garage I noticed a sticker on the underside of one of the chairs "made in poland" was the bit still in tact, so i went looking at the others and they say "mundus" ... turns out mundus and thonet were the same company for a while and I have scored some original antique thonet benchwood chairs. Win! Too excited to sleep so had to share. Over and out!

Like you I am a huge fan of Bentwoods...I have six bentwood style dining chairs (not thonet) in my kitchen...... I also wanted bentwood stool for island but they are too tall....

I am so happy for you....... I am dancing around as if I bought them.... Can wait until we see what you do with them....

What an awesome find, LDH! You might just have taken over as Number One Decorating Forum Bargain Hunter!!!

Are you still planning to paint them?

I am far more nervous about doing anything to them now as I wouldn’t want my workmanship to be too amateur however what has been done to them at present is a true atrocity so I’ll speak to some of the woodworking guys and get some advice on whether I would be able to strip them back to timber without ruining all the embossing etc. The chemicals can be harsh and I wouldn’t want to scrape them so it would need to be a gentle procedure. If I can I will, if not I will paint them a dark brown almost black semi gloss, much like the ones you see in the shops. Will have to be careful with which primer I choose as sanding will be something to do gently so a primer that doesn’t require sanding would be a good start if I decide to paint.

Bring on the holidays so I can begin! Yay!

LDH when I stripped 7 coats of paint from our old Singer table I found a citrus based stripper to be the gentlest - on me and the wood. It was slow going but it did the job with a little steel wool. But by all means talk to the woodworking experts. So excited for you. Even I was jumping up and down last night.
Just don't tell Rosie you have stolen her Queen of the Bargains crown.
