Default Art above the Sofa

Do you prefer to use one large piece of art, or several pieces grouped tightly together, for above a sofa (in family and formal lounge)?

Do you follow the 75% rule? Where the width of the art piece or collection is 75% of the overall width of the sofa.

We don't have any sort of art or photos what so ever, and don't really know what we like so I look forward to reading your tips and advice

I think you need to take into account what is around ... windows/doors other furniture (particularly those with some height).

For instance, if you had some higher (shelves/bookcases) nearby and then put large pieces of art up it could look very busy/heavy.

Where is the art going and what do you have adjacent/nearby?

I like either but as Jess_F it depends on the room and what else is happening. I do generally follow the 75% guideline. I will go bigger with mirrors.
When decorating a room I tend to do it in layers. So I start with all the big items like furniture and paint colours. I do look at any art that has already been purchased. The art can be a jumping off point for what colours to use in the room. Then I will move on to rugs and lighting. Then art. Then cushions, throws and ornaments.
Did you have any art in mind TIM?

Thanks J-A. What about curtains, at what stage do you normally do those?

Oops missed the curtains. I do them as we are selecting paint colours and furniture. They all have to work together. But as you are having a very neutral scheme you can do them before the furniture. It's just if you doing any feature walls or adding wallpaper you need to think about curtains too.
So I think you need to work on choosing the curtains and your furniture next.
