Hi all :)

We will need to put together out electrical plan soon. However we can't decide where to have the tv points. Especially in the sitting and family rooms. What would you recommend?

For the family room we were thinking of putting it on the wall on the rights (next to the laundry) as there is more room on the "left" wall for a bigger modular lounge. But then if the wall is near the laundry I won't be able to see the tv from the kitchen :(
Ahhh.

Hi Thisisme I think you are right the tv needs to go on the laundry wall. The modular looks like it would be best on the left wall.
As far as seeing it from the kitchen you could put a tv in the kitchen. When cooking I can't see the tv and from half of the meals table as well. So I put a small tv inside an upper cabinet in the kitchen. It is on a pull out shelf and we use it all the time. My Dad has a small LCD tv he keeps in a lower cabinet in the kitchen. When they want to watch it they lift it onto the bench. So you would need a tv point in the kitchen.
I just realised I didn't look at the other room- I will be back:)

Do you want a tv in the gym and think about any bedrooms or future toyrooms? With the cinema and the sitting room it is hard to say where would be best as it depends on your furniture. Do you have furniture already for these rooms?
It is important to also know how many points you want as that affects the size of your aerial.

No, we dont have furniture for any rooms other than the family room. Wow, did'nt realise the number of points affects the size of the aerial :(

Yes my tech tv guy tells me it makes a difference. We have 4 tv points but 1 is not active as we would have to change the aerial for that to happen.
I would suggest in the gym you put the tv on the wall closest to the laundry, in the cinema room I would put it on the wall near the powder room, and in the sitting room the wall near the portico. But another thing to remember is that most tv cabinets are 1.8-2metres long. So you need that amount of space to fit the entertainment unit.

Thanks for that! :)
I keep telling my parner that the tv point/tv in the cinema room needs to be on the wall where the door is but he doesn't agree :( for some stupid reason he wants it on the wall near the cinema room, because the wall is wider :(

Do you mean he wants it on the wall backing on to the gym?
Without knowing your furniture - I would save that space for a sofa.
And I probably wouldn't lose the doorway to the kitchen, especially if this becomes a toy room. Immediate access to the kitchen and where you are likely to be will be very convenient:)

Yes, that's where he wants it
We haven't got the furniture for the cinema room yet tho...

Yeah, that's why we originally wanted the door but then realised it would reduce the kitchen space and would break it up and it woudn't "flow" as nicelly...

Well now you can blame me and say I said the tv needs to go near the powder room lol. Plus you don't want the sofa there as when the loo is being used the people in the cinema room will be in ear shot. Not a very good situation.
If it was my house I would keep the door. Yes the kitchen looks better without it but not bad with it. If that makes sense.

Cinema room - if you get rid of the door into the kitchen I would put tv point on pantry wall or gym wall. I am not a massive fan of all furniture running alongs walls so I like to float things. Sorry Julie-Ann but if it were me I wouldn't put the tv on the powder room wall hahaha!! It's just that the wall will not look right and off balance with the doors and tv on it :)

Are you having a tv in the sitting room?

I would put tv point for family room on external wall on same side as meals.

I have gone against everyone here haven't I!?? Again, I would float your modular and not run it against walls :) :)

hehe. This is exactly my partner's argument for wanting the tv on the gym wall

Such controversy Katrina- daring to disagree:D:D
No I don't put furniture up against the walls either just in that vicinity.
The best way to decide is to cut out pieces of coloured card to represent your furniture. So the cutouts need to be the same scale as your house plans. Layout your furniture cutouts on your plans. Include coffee tables and tv units.
You can also do this on 3D programmes if you have access to them. They are very fiddly to use if you have never used one before.
If you don't have furniture for a room yet- go out to some stores together and get the measurements of some furniture that you like and use that as a guide.
We did this when we were building and it really helps.

My partner and I discussed the cinema room today and agreed to have the tv point on the pantry wall :)
Thanks for the suggestion!!!!

I'm glad a compromise has been made:)

We've also decided on the sitting room tv point :) - it will go on the inner wall, in order to avoid furniture width restrictions...
Still not sure on the family room tho - will need to measure our lounge since it will need to go there.

Thank you all so much for helping us make these very important decisions

We measured our L shape lounge last night and realised that it won't be able to fit in the Family room :( - such a weird shape both family and sitting room :(
A bit devastated at the moment :(

What lounges are the most common in open living areas like ours?

Could you use the modular sofa in the cinema or the sitting room Thisisme?

When buying lounge suites 2 x good size chairs will cost a lot more than 1 x 2 &1/2 seater sofa. We have 2 x 2&1/2 seater sofas and I find they work in almost every situation. The most flexible is probably a long sofa and 2 chairs though. The only problem with our 2 sofas is now that our son has grown we all kind of want a sofa to ourselves. So I bought an ottoman the length of the sofa. It sits off to the side or you could use it as a coffee table. So now 2 of us can sit in one sofa with the ottoman and the other person (usually Mr17) has the 2nd sofa to themselves.
I hope this all makes sense.:)
P.S. I see you have my house style on your blog- small world:D

Thanks Julie.

We've had this lounge for almost 3 years now. Although it's leather, it's not the best quality and we didn't really want it in the sitting room for this reason. We are planning to buy a nice one for this room... :( and recycle the current one in the family room. The problem now is if we put this one in the cinema room we will need to buy two new ones, one for the sitting and another for the family room. Unfortunatelly, due to our small furniture budget we are planning to only furnise the living area for now :(
I wish I had an unlimited budget :(

An unlimited budget- oh how we all wish for that:(
And there is absolutely no way to get it to work in the family room? Even if it isn't quite right.
I think we all have to accept Rome wasn't built in a day and most people take ages (even years) to get their house just right.
