It is often very hard to get started when decorating a room and even for some a little overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you create a gorgeous room.

1. Collect Pictures:
Gather together pictures of rooms or objects you like. You can do this using magazines or creating a folder on your computer of internet pictures. You will start to see a style forming. You may be attracted to similar colours or styles in each picture.

2. Take our quiz:
I found this great quiz (http://www.decoratingforum.com.au/showthread.php/decorating-style-friday-33.html?t=33&highlight=quiz) on the internet. It is unlike other quizzes that ask you a whole lot of questions. The best part of this quiz is it is surprisingly accurate most of the time. Now you will be able to understand your decorating style.

3. Uses and Users of the room:
Think about who in the family will use this room and for what tasks. Does this room need to be casual or more formal, suitable more for children or adults or both?

4. Buy quality:
If you have to purchase any expensive items such as a sofa buy the best quality you can afford. Spend less on the smaller items that are easier to replace.

5. Keep neutral:
With your more expensive items I would suggest you buy more neutral styled and coloured items. Add your pizzazz with the less expensive items. You don’t want to have to replace something expensive because it looks so dated. Your cushions, throw rugs, art and ornaments can add lots of style and colour to your room.

6. Proportion and scale:
Buy furniture that fits the proportions of your room. Look at the space you have in the room or on a wall and choose something that fits. Don’t overstuff the room with furniture that is too big for it or cram a lot of furniture into the room.

7. Less is more:
Clear away the clutter. Show off your special objects by grouping a few together. Put the rest away and swap them over from time to time. Less clutter means less dusting:)

This is just a short list to start you off. Can you add more to our list to help other members to get the rooms of their dreams?
