We bought a fluffy rug 4 months ago. Everyday about 100 of those little silk threads get loose and end up all over the house. I would have thought it would stop this after a couple of weeks but it hasn't at all. Is this normal? Has anyone else had this problem? This is driving me crazy! We joke that eventually we will have a bald rug.

We also bought a fluffy rug about 12 mths ago. We got it from Fantastic Furniture and was not very expensive. The saleslady told me that hers dropped threads for a while but it would stop but I noticed that ours seemed to go for a fair while. It slowed down to just a few now I did get told that the more expensive ones are not as bad at shedding threads .

Hi everyone
It greatly depends on the quality of the rug you buy, cheaper ones do tend to do it more than the better quality ones. But when buying a rug with art silk threads in it, they will ALL lose threads to some degree, its the nature of the fibre. Art Silk is very fine and smooth, and it comes out very very easily. Most rugs are over-threaded with art silk fibres to allow for the ones that will come out.
There is a very fine line between normal shedding and a fault with the rug. if the shedding is excessive and doesnt settle down, and you start to see bald patches, then there may be a fault. A common fault is that not enough glue is used to secure the fibres.
The best thing if your unsure, is to take it back to the shop you bought it from, and usually we can tell straight away if there is a problem. Also if the rug is mainly art silk/polyester, its best to only lightly vaccuum, not use a strong power head/rotating head as they are too strong.
Please reply if you have any further questions

Thankyou for the help. I took the rug back today and the shop was very nice about it and exchanged it. They agreed it was faulty. So heres hoping this one is better.

thats great sunnygal, glad the problem is sorted
unfortunately its is hard to determine if rugs are faulty until they are purchased and used.
with us, it doesnt happen often but it does happen, and our suppliers are fabulous and always give refunds on faulty rugs
good luck with this one!
