Statement-making decorator Martyn Lawrence-Bullard shares his script for an eloquent living room centerpiece

November 16, 2011|By Lisa Cregan | Special to Tribune Newspapers (http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-11-16/classified/sc-home-1114-coffee-table-20111116_1_coffee-table-coffee-cup-books)

Perhaps Rorschach should have gone with coffee tables rather than inkblots. According to Martyn Lawrence-Bullard, award-winning interior designer who was featured on Bravo's "Million Dollar Decorators" and author of a new book called "Live, Love & Decorate" (Rizzoli), coffee tables are your home's own little personality test. Lawrence-Bullard says coffee table accessories are so personal they're often the very last thing he does in a home, "They're as important as art because they can express who you are."
Not that Lawrence-Bullard's clients typically have much trouble expressing who they are. He's designed homes for Cher, Elton John and Sharon and Ozzie Osbourne, just to name a few. Their homes all reflect Lawrence-Bullard's irresistible bravado and the coffee tables are no exception. "People congregate around them so coffee tables need to feel important and personal." His only warning? Be sure to leave room for a coffee cup.

3 ways to play
Your choice of objects might be highly personal, but the path to that style statement can be quantified. Lawrence-Bullard has three prin****l recipes for building a big-personality coffee table:
1. The layered look

Having a very simple rectangular table in wood or parchment provides freedom to use "lots of complicated layers of accessories" says Lawrence-Bullard, because the table's simple shape doesn't compete for attention.

Use books as foundation: Lawrence-Bullard suggests using large art books in two stacks as the initial layer. "Perhaps four large books that reflect your interests on one side, with three more on the opposite side," he says.

Add a bowl: To balance the differing heights of the two stacks of books, add an eye-catching bowl on top of the smaller stack.

And a vase full of flowers: Tuck in between the books. "You always need flowers!" he says. But take care not to center it on the table. "That would be too stiff. It should be off to one side."

Keep like with like: Lawrence-Bullard says the books, bowl and vase should still leave room for a collection. "The key to displaying a collection of small objects like that is to group 'like' things together. It's more pleasing to the eye."

Compliment the architecture: In supermodel Cheryl Tiegs' house Lawrence-Bullard used the coffee table to direct the eye to her place's jaw-dropping architecture. "Cheryl's table is black lacquer, and much higher than normal because the ceilings in her house are 24 feet high," he explains, "So then the things we placed on top are tall too."

2. The less-is-more attitude

Lawrence-Bullard says when he has a client whose table has a dramatic silhouette or pattern "then I definitely want to be simple with my accents and accessories."

Again with the books: "Yes, I'd still start with books, but in this case I'd use only a few. And I might stack them all on just one side of the table."

Add a large bowl: Lawrence-Bullard says he'd want to keep things low and u***trusive so instead of a vase he might find an ebony or silver bowl to go opposite the books. "Then I'd fill it to the brim with peonies or roses."

Go below: If your table itself is busy but you can't part with your coffee table books, stack them underneath to keep the look calm. It will look less messy and the kids can still play a game or eat a meal while watching television. "A family room coffee table should be decorative but it has to function too!"

Color-coordinate (then don't): In the Hollywood home of Julia Sorkin, Lawrence-Bullard used two ottomans covered in zebra print fabric in place of a coffee table. But that required keeping the accessories minimal and color-coordinated so the look wouldn't get too busy. He says he added black, ivory and silver accents to sync with the palette, then purposely threw the palette aside with shockingly bright pink orchids. "That's a color not represented anywhere else. It gives a burst to the whole room."

3. The mood changer

"It's very difficult to come up with a simple explanation for styling this type of coffee table," says Lawrence-Bullard, "but it's about creating a table that sets the mood and influences the entire room. It's spiritual and deeply personal."

Create a focal point: Lawrence-Bullard confides that Cher (yes, that Cher) is currently "going through a Buddhist phase." So he started her table top off with a lovely ancient Asian statue as the largest, most important object. Then he grouped smaller gold metal figurines around it (keeping 'like' things together).

Worship height: To give the collection of statues even more importance, they're raised up on a tray. Then he used a tall wooden candleholder on the opposite side of the table to balance the statues' height.

Match flowers to message: Lawrence-Bullard prefers his flower arrangements simple and elegant. For Cher, "Orchids just seemed appropriate and exotic," he says of the violet dendrobium orchids that drape protectively over the Asian statue.

Top ten
10 things to look for to style your coffee table a la Martyn Lawrence-Bullard:
Ivory, bone white boxes

Coffee table books
Black lacquer tray
Vintage glass vases,
Buddhist artifacts
Midcentury glass
Silver bowl
Glass paperweight
Altar candles
Orchids

So which look are you?

We've never had coffee tables in our houses, but will be in the new house (once we can agree on one), so I don't know which one I am. Buuuuut, I loved the article. Thanks JA!

My coffee table says that I have 2 kids that love to dump stuff and never put anything away. Oh, and that I'm a magazine junkie! LOL.

Definitely the 'layered' look. Layered with kids 'stuff' I haven't had a chance to clean up! Although the side table is clean, and has books underneath on the shelf and a collection of glass paper weights, an Eiffel tower plate and a small candy jar with shells in it. It still needs a bit of work and I'm about to re-style all my horizontal surfaces!

Lol I love the magazine addict Stormy:D.
So apart from the deliberately placed decorations - my coffee table says Mr18 is interested in financial matters as his Money magazine is sitting there, my DH travels a lot as his travel itinerary for this year is on there, and I am focused on family as there are photos of how to arrange a gallery of photos on a wall. Normally there are a pile of decorating magazines too but I put them away the other day.

Loved this post JA, very interesting... We only have our coffee table for the sitting room (ready to go into our new house) but its square and wooden, quite plain but I would say that it will be the layered look once I "dress" it.

My coffee table will definitely harbour decorating magazines underneath (im also a decorating magazine addict :o) but maybe on top some blue china of some discription, coffee table books and possibly coral under a glass cloche and a round glass vase with some flowers... well that's what Im picturing :D.

I am a rug addict so prefer to not have a coffe table so that the rug takes centre stage. If I did have one it would need to have a glass top and I can just imagine what grandchildren would do to that!:love it:

Jane they are all great ideas:thumbs up:. You could take Martyn's advice and use books too. A few attractive books would look fabulous with your style. How's the decorating progressing?
Robbie it's so nice to meet you:). Rugs are such an important element to use when decorating - it adds style, comfort, texture and defines the space. What type of rug do you have in your Living area Robbie? I would love to have a Zebra or Cow hide rug but DH just rolls his eyes when I suggest it:(.

I love the look of rugs on wooden floors, but ooooooh my gosh, they are so expensive. I nearly had a heart attack a couple of weeks ago when I started looking at rugs for my family room. Any tips on where to get some and which are the best?... hmmm i think this should be in a thread!:D

Hi Julie Ann
Only just had time to check in. Decorating is going good, - have reorganized the family room, still gotta replace the curtains, but it's not too bad. Will possibly do different cushions too, the ones i bought really are more 'winter' style, but will wait until i've got the curtains sorted. Just bought a bunch of picture frames and have some 'antique' ones too and doing a gallery wall. One good find, while taking the back off a junk shop find frame i came across a really sweet country watercolor, so that's being reframed for the front entrance.

How wonderful to find something special like the water colour. I can't wait to see your gallery - I love them. Are you going to have just photos or did you decide to add some other items? I change my cushions and throws in the Family room for Summer and Winter. It is nice to have something cozy in Winter but something light and breezy for Summer. What are you thinking of for the curtains?

Hi Julie Ann, getting the photos etc up this weekend, Some are childhood photos - one even of me with Santa, another of my father in 1939 in his army uniform, he was such a dashing man!I'll wait to decide re cushion covers for a summer look - yes i know i'm nearly too late - but i want to decide on the curtain cover first and we're seriously thinking of painting the family room (and the bulkhead in the kitchen as no natural break) - called landscape (wattyl brand) it's a soft blue. (ya think i'm a blue gal???)
no idea re the curtains yet, quite like the idea of perhaps even linen/burlap, i notice a lot of people don't use lining these days and this room has a big stove/fireplace so i may just go for something light weight.

Here are some pics of the coffee table in my living room. I think they say: I like French romantic decor, white furniture, pink, flowers, candles, bling, tidiness (drink coasters), gentleness, chic decor but with a light-hearted youthful feel. Wow! I didn't know a coffee table could reveal so much.

Di - it's so lovely, really pretty. Wish my house could cope with such pretti-ness, but with cats, dogs, teens, doesn't go togehter.

Thank you for showing me. I love romantic furnishing - guess that's why i'm a romance writer!

Aaaw thank you Jane. I also have dogs (3) and cats (2), no teens however, but I do have visiting children. But really, it's not as difficult as you think to have this look. If you choose shabby chic furniture, a little nick here and there goes unnoticed & the furniture is sooo comfy yet pretty. Rachel Ashwell's whole style is based on having furniture that is relaxing & not too precious. You can place your own interpretation on the style. I prefer more chic than shabby, but I painted all the furniture myself, so can do touch-ups at any time. In my family room I have big, squashy feather sofas with off-white washable covers, which the pets make themselves at home on. The covers look even better after being washed (in the machine), so that's not a problem. I've included pics below of the sofas in the family room and one of the puppies who doesn't know he's a dog. :D

Thanks JA & Jane. Like any proud mum, I'll lap up compliments about my 'babies'... oh, & my house too. I know my style is not for everyone, but Jane, embrace your true passion, whatever it is. You only live once.

I've wanted to go French Provincial since the early '90's and have only just had the courage to embrace it in the last few years. Now my heart sings every time I come home. I still see my house with new eyes every time I walk through the door, but I know what you mean JA, after you've been away, your first vision of your house when you return is so impartial, you're seeing it as though you were a stranger. If you admire it, you know you've done something right.
