View Full Version : Fixing the Draft

Ok so our home business has recently been moved out of the home and now I have my single garage to convert into a playroom for my boys who are growing up way to fast I might add.
We put an internal door in about 18months ago which gives the room access to the house and the original plan was to replace the roller doors (one at each end) with sliding doors to make it officially a room however it looks now that we may move early next year and we want to keep the roller doors for resale value.
My dilemma is with winter coming up we get a draft coming in above the roller doors so we need something to fix the draft and keep the chilly air coming thru. My husband thought a big blanket to seal it off and then maybe I could screen off each end of the room with curtains or something similar.
Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

Hi Belinda, how big is the drafty area?

Its just where the top of the roller door starts and the bricks of the house are not sealed so maybe 2-3 inches at the most.
I was looking at it again today and thought maybe getting some foam cut to size to wedge in.

Ok cool! I was thinking of a weather seal strip - easy to attach (I was reading about people converting garages to rooms and they were doing this). Can buy it in a roll and can cut to suit.
Then I would definitely put some drapery (best would be insulated rubber backed). They would look very luxurious too across a whole wall all gathered.
If you need pictures I can find some too!
PS. What about a big chalk wall in there too?!!

Can you get weather strip that wide Katrina? I have never really looked.
You might also want to use it on the bottom of the garage door in case any draught comes in there to.
It would solve the problem very easily:)

Yes I was thinking the same thing with the curtains, I have started looking today for some inspiration and getting bombarded with ideas LOL
We have to stick with most of the odd bits of furniture we have for now but most of its in the same colour so thats a bonus.
Im thinking Im going to set half the room up as an entertainment area for the boys, with their playstation and all their other techno gadgets and use the other half as a study / craft area.
A chalkboard area is certainly on the cards, I sell them thru the business and I have been dieing to find a place in my house where I can put up one the large chalkals (http://gigglesmiledesigns.com.au/Store/index.php?main_page=index&manufacturers_id=24) that i stock. They are so stunning and I have been wanting to put one up for ages but did not want to let the boys loose in their rooms with chalk :)
I did a big clean out today of clutter and things that needed to be sorted thru so we are planning to get most of the work done this weekend.

I love those chalk decals too. I saw an Elephant one for Fiona. Do you sell that one?

An idea I have heard about is building a pelmet type box to go over the roller door covering it and helping to block it off. Not sure how it works exactly but I can sort of picture it.
And also using foam like you mentioned could help to seal off the top of the roller door and exclude the drafts.

I just looked on Bunnings website and there was a pdf file on a how to seal doors and windows and it said weather seal strips come in various sizes. Might just have to go and ask someone? Good luck!!

Giggle_smile, Bunnings are owned by Wesfarmers if you want to buy those shares. We have seriously thought about it too. We certainly spend enough money there:D.
Let us know if the have weather strip that will do the job.:)
