So we are still to decide but DH and I are wanting to do something nice but subtle for DS (he is 2) new room.....
I have a few ideas and this is one of them.....panelling around the bottom of the room but a really nice rich navy paint above this dado height.
Or I could just paint the room Navy and have no panelling with some decals, its quite a large light filled room...It would only be in this one room, do you think it will look out of place.

I love the paneling...I actually thought about it too...still thinking if its right for my space though. It would certainly be more durable for kids LOL:p

What a gorgeous bedroom in the picture.
I think Kids bedrooms can be totally different from the rest of the house. Which is just as well as I don't really want a house decorated in Chelsea Soccer blue:D.
I agree the paneling will not only look good but will be tough.
You might enjoy this tutorial A Beach Cottage (http://www.abeachcottage.com/my_weblog/beach-cottage-diy-bead-board-stepbystep.html) did when she added paneling recently.

Thats a great Blog Julie-Anne, I am leaning more towards it now.....will run past DH again..
I think your right childrens rooms really are anything goes, and nothing is permanent in houses so we should consider all options.:D;)

It's a great blog. I was just reading her latest update.
Nothing is ever permanent in this house:D either. We have been here 6 years and most rooms have had 2 makeovers- the bedroom is about to get its 3rd.

Hi everyone, I have been discussing this with DH at length and we have decided(he has decided:rolleyes:) that we need more pictures to be sure we are doing the right thing by choosing this panelling.............
So I am enlisting all your help to come up with any pictures that has wall panelling in and that doesn't look "beachy".....excuse my grammer as I am writing quickly..........as he so eloquently put it....
apparently the rest of our house will not look "beachy" (wow he's so amazing how he came to that conclusion;)) hes not reading this so I can be cheeky........
so why would we do it in DS's room......was his response..........
Please help!

That is so funny Elements. Did you remind him that people actually pay you to decorate their homes and you might actually know what you are talking about lol:D? Although don't waste your time, that line doesn't work with my DH:(.
Off to search for photos of non beachy paneling:D

Because you want to. LOL. My son lives in a Knights castle (his room).. it isnt the rest of the house tho.
Have you looked into the cheaper option - rather than traditional panelling you can buy MDF cut with the same look.. adhere it (nail it glue whatever) and the add the top moulding...
Our last house was a replica queenslander (this paneling style usually goes floor to ceiling in the originals).. i have to say it was a PAIN IN THE BOTTOM to keep clean... dust fills those crevices and is harder to clean at skirting board level. but it was a pleasant effect and wasn't beachy at all.

That room looks gorgeous Elements and I would love my son to have a room like that. However when I showed the room to dh he said it needs more colour. Men, what do they know
I spent a bit of time searching last night and found a few photos which might help you to convince your dh.

I LOVE the panneling! I would die to have some - seriously. I just don't have the energy to get it up. I definitely don't think it's a beachy look. I think it's classy and interesting. But I really like the white look in your original photo. That is very cool and would really look good in a boys bedroom. Let us know how you go!

Hello, I am doing a quick email from work today, its a little quiet and I really wanted to let you all know.....thanks to Milena and Julie-Annes photos I think we have persuaded DH into the panelling.
Milena, picture 3 and 4 will be our influence and now we(DH actually:rolleyes:) will also be considering a train track around the top of the walls as per pic 3
GIve the man an inch and plant the seed and we have created a decorator monster:eek:
His thoughts were, he could actually just put the correct profile timber in squares around the room and then run a dado rail around the middle and just paint the wall the same colour white/light....instead of actual panels
Now for another opinion do we paint it in gloss or flat.....if its gloss we will have to do some sort of panels I would think or flat straight on the wall.
Have I made sense? TRying to write so quickly..............lol
But yay!!! we have done it collectively:D

I think I understand what you are saying. He wants large square panel like in Milena's pictures 3 &4 and not bead boarding?
And instead of glueing a large flat piece of wood to the wall and then having the moulding on top of that, he is thinking of glueing the moulding directly to the wall? Then he will paint the wall, the moulding and the dado rail the 1 colour?
Have I got it right?
I do like the little train track and with it being up high it does prevent disasters and the Austrian Alps being squashed (read this (http://www.decoratingforum.com.au/showthread.php/child-attacks-lcd-90.html?t=90&highlight=lcd) to understand:D).

Yes and thankyou for deciphering Julie-Anne, you are spot on.......
...and yes DS will not be able to get his fire truck up the wall for any explosions:D

I'm glad we are on the right track:).
Personally I would paint the dado rail, the mouldings and the wall below the dado rail in a standard acrylic low sheen paint. You could do it in a gloss to make it different from the top but then every little imperfection in the plaster and mouldings will show.
I have included 2 pictures to give an idea of what it will look like.
Are you going to carry the trains on in the room with other items?

I think we will go that way with the low sheen paint.....the train theme is new and and DS is quite diverse in his interests......I am not sure who would want it more though DS or DH;):D

Lol I know what you mean. I don't think the Austrian alps train tracks were built for my son but more for his father:D.
Maybe racing car or motorbike accessories would suit DS better?

Hi Elements sorry for a late reply I was out and about the whole day. I am glad our pictures helped convince your dh to go with the panelling. I would love to see the photos of what you end up doing :)
