View Full Version : Wooden Venetian Blinds
Hi everyone, I am after some feeback on wooden venetian blinds...in particular should they hang down over the top and sides of the window frame or should they sit nicely within the window frame? I have seen them both ways.
Thanks Hel

Hi Hel
Yes I have seen them both ways too.
Are they for short windows with window sills that stick out from the wall?
Or are they for windows that go the floor?
That makes the difference for me.

I have seen them both ways too. I don't really have a major preference, but I think they look better inside the frame if you have 2 windows next to each other. Hope that makes sense. And I think if your windows are not a standard size then it's hard to buy ones that fit inside :)

Hi Hel
In our previous house we had wooden venetian blinds in our ensuite and the bathroom. My dh installed them both but you need to be very careful with the measurements if you are installing them by yourself and not by a professional. In the ensuite we had a long and narrow window so they were inside the frame. In the bathroom the window was wide and we had them outside the window frame. Personally I prefer inside of the frame I think they look much nicer that way.
I have a real mixture, a couple of bedroom ones that aren't to wide and don't go to the floor, a large bedroom one that is wide and goes to the floor, a wide lounge window that doesn't go to the floor, two smaller lounge ones that don't go the floor. Additionally I have one french door to cover that we never use and two sliding doors that get used a lot. ( some bright spark thought two large sliding doors and one french door in one room was a good idea when building the room).

Hi Hel
It is a matter of your taste. But for me in a bedroom I would have them out of the frame so that light cant sneak in through the sides. I like my sleepins and don't want anything waking me up:D. For the smaller windows in the bedroom I would have them no wider than the window sill. The problem though with them being out of the frame, everytime you raise and lower them they are likely to mark your wall.
With windows in other rooms personally I like them in the frame too.
With timber blinds the quality varies enormously too. I have found some cheaper ones have warped but then I have installed cheaper ones that haven't:confused:
I hope this helps.

We recently installed western red cedar blinds :D
Mind you we got new windows which we put the blinds inside as it looked a lot better. We have no issues with light peeking thru or anything. We had them prop measured and fitted which is what made all the diff for a nice fit and look for us. When we have done them ourselves in the past....well lets just say we are not that handy LOL:p
Thanks for the feedback, am going to have a look at a couple of different makes before I decide.
