If you're anything like me, whenever I'm watching a movie, my attention is diverted by beautiful rooms, houses, buildings or landscaping. So much so, that I don't really enjoy going to the movies any more because I can't re-wind or pause. I most enjoy being by myself, watching a dvd on the big screen tv, where I can re-wind and pause to my heart's content. Some of my favourite homes in movies are: Father of the Bride; Steel Magnolias; Home Alone 1 & 2; Young At Heart; The Money Pit. Can anyone recommend any movies that have really beautiful houses in them?

oh I love the house in Father of the Bride. I love American homes, their kitchens, high skirts and colours they have on their walls. I should be able to give you heaps of movies but at the moment can't think of one!! I love watching movies, that's my way to relax. I'll reply when my memory returns

Hey, TTD, I'm with you: when it comes to building houses, the Americans have real style. The architectural detailing, both inside and out, give their homes such character & beauty. I styled my own house on American colonial, adding little touches of my own personal homage to Australian style as well. Such as: (I know a lot of you live in the west), but do you know the Paddington style of terrace houses in Sydney, built with creamy, sandstock brick that has splotches of black, shiny, coal-like substance in them, and decorated with beautiful white colonial iron lace? Well, I incorporated those elements into my home. I also love gables & dormer windows, but this type of window doesn't let in much light, so I had my own version of dormer windows built.

Anyway, I digress, thanks TTD for your recommendations, some of those I've seen and totally agree with, others I have now the delight of watching.

Your facade looks lovely RFC ;) I have followed a blog for the past 1.5 years of a lady who built a house in Brisbane, New England (?) style. It's just lovely and she has a great room with built in book case/cupboards/window seat. Divine.

The movie Something's Gotta Give is one of my favourite homes -

Thanks again TTD! I just had a quick look at that site and can't wait to get back to it. I also have the picture of 'Le Chateau' at Dural on my slideshow. Love it! It was used in the series 'Packed to the Rafters'. I copied the pic from a real estate ad.

Have you seen the blog by A Beach Cottage in Sydney. You might enjoy that too. Actually we did a thread on favourite blogs (http://www.decoratingforum.com.au/showthread.php/home-decorating-blogs-203.html?t=203&highlight=blogs) It might give you some more.

Glad you both are enjoying A-M's blog. Katrina is a follower too ;) It's a lovely home, presented so well. I wish I had the knack like that (and the $$)

The Chateau in Doral, what was it used for in Rafters? Sam's parents house?

Thanks for the blog link thread. I'll have a look at it and see if I can add to it.

Hi RFC
I just notices the picture of your house- several posts back.
It is gorgeous. I love the windows:). I am a big fan of bay windows- but then you probably guessed that.

I was actually flicking through here trying to decide which of these movie I am going to watch on the weekend. This is the short list:
He's just not into you
The family stone
Young heart
Father of the Bride

Which one?

TTD: Yes, Le Chateau at Dural was Sam's parents' house in Packed to the Rafters.

JA: Thanks for compliment re house.
Agree, re movie to watch, Father of the Bride I & II by far the best choice out of all of those. They are real feel-good movies. BTW, have been watching 'A Year in Provence', expected it to be better than it was. However, loved the house, countryside & village, & it gave me a chance to test my French a bit. Do you speak French fluently, JA?

Lol Romantic French Cottage my french is terrible. But surprisingly the only french we needed when traveling there was in a restaurant. How to ask for the menu and the bill, and how to read the menu. Either they spoke perfect english or you could use sign language:D.
I haven't seen A Year in Provence for decades so I can't remember much about it. There was a movie recently with Russell Crowe that was filmed there- I heard that was very inspiring.
My video store didn't have any Father of the Bride movies:(. So I have got Family Stone to watch this afternoon whilst I draw up a kitchen I am working on.

What did you think of The Family Stone Julie-Ann? Hope you enjoyed it.

The only word I made sure I knew when we went to France was Cheval. I was so stressed about buying horse meat or ordering it :o

We rented a Chalet in Morzine for one holiday, our land-lady lived downstairs and spoke not one word of English. One night we were having dinner out on the Balcony and she came the stairs and asked us a question. It took half an hour to work out that she wanted to know if we needed a table cloth...... :D

I loved the movie thanks tryingtodecorate. I had a wonderful afternoon. DH & Mr16 were busy so I had the family room all to myself. So I sat here and watched the movie whilst designing a kitchen for a client. It was chic flick, decorating bliss:D.
When we went to Belgium one of the first words I learned was horse meat. What a revolting thought. We have seen some weird things on menus - you need to be so careful. These days though we can sit in a restaurant & google the words:).
We had a similar experience in Italy to your tablecloth story -we were sitting in the courtyard of a little cafe and a young mother and her 3 year old daughter sat down. The 3 year old was smitten with Mr14 & convinced him to toss pebbles into the pond in the courtyard. Then the mother tried to talk to us. 24 hours later I worked out she wasn't asking about the toilets but what did I do for work:o. The word for work in Italian is lavoro- sounded like lavatory to me lol.

I might have to get another movie out this weekend:)

I'm having a chuckle about the Italian story Julie-Ann. I love the Italian language and we've had some wonderful holidays over there. I wonder what the woman thought after she left you? Discussing toilets!

Your afternoon sounded lovely. Can't beat a good movie and having the room to yourself! Glad you enjoyed it.

I treated myself to some R&R today. I've done enough cooking and cleaning and running around after everyone all week. I watched The Holiday with Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz. Haven't watched it for ages. I've always loved the little English Cottage but today took more notice of the LA house. Lovely
