View Full Version : Hanging Pictures? Their height?

So what is everyone's view on how high/low we should hang a picture? Are we all following the new trend of everything looking low, or are people still hanging 2/3 up the wall? Personally I am more likely to hang in between these 2 options.

Would love to know what you think!

Personally I don't think you can hang them too low but you can hang them too high.
The decorating rule is that the middle of the painting is hung at eye height. We always debate well whose eye height? My DH is 6 foot and I am 5ft 4in. So we hang it in the middle of our eye heights- so perfect for a person 5ft 7in:D.
But the pictures look great hung low just above a piece of furniture and even resting on the floor.
What do you all think?

As a photographer I get this one a LOT. The eye height thing is questionable like Julie said.. whose eye height!!

We have software which imports the client's room and we place the image at a pleasing height and can show them in the ordering appt where it would go ...
It is all calibrated so we can tell them the hanging heights..

Happy to do this for you and send some screen shots or you can simply take a photo and put a second photo of the item on the same photo.. print them out and move it around.

Middle of the clients eye height is the goal on communal areas with limited furniture.. but we bounce of furniture in rooms like lounge rooms etc.

My hubby is also 6 foot something and me a shortie....we hang things at a pleasing eye to us....if something is too high or too low for someone than tuff ****ies we say, its our home, and if we choose to break the rules as we did in one spot and hang something a little higher than normal (we had our reasons) ...well i think sometimes rules are meant to be broken...or as hubby says, my house, my rules LOL.

Agree - hang them at a pleasing height! But doesn't it just erk you sometimes when you see shots of people's homes and they are either too high or too low - I feel the urge to tell them as it's a pet hate of mine.

I definitely don't like them too high.
I had a couple as clients once- he was 6ft 5in she was 5ft. Try finding a common eye height for them:D
But I don't mind them low. I have seen art placed just above a bedside table or a dressing table and it looked magnificent. But when it is sitting on the floor resting against the wall - well then to me it just looks like you haven't got around to hanging it up:D.

I quite like to rest things sometimes Julie-Ann. I guess it just depends on what it is use is. I have layered 2 tall mirrors over each other (they are different heights and widths) on a sideboard in my entry and have grown to love them. But yes, on the floor is not my thing :)

Wow the mirrors sound very interesting. You will have to post a picture some time:)

I'm a photographer too- but strangely enough I never get this question.
I use software like Laane but I also have an Image Styling service for my clients which takes all the anxiety about hanging heights away.

Personally I think the eye level thing is only a tiny bit of the equation, so many other things are important too to ensure the balance and impact that an art piece might have. Surroundings, colours, other wall fixture and fittings etc all have an important role.

I don't think there's ever an easy one size fits all solution...you need to try and look and move around the room too not just look at things straight on.

The mirrors sound very cool can we see? Pleeeeeeeeeeease??

The big homewares and furniture company I used to work for had a rule for anything like pictures and prints and it was generally with some exceptions...
10cm above the height of the item below depending on what else was going on in the room and a few other exceptions....
I think the reason behind this was most people view the pic from at least a couple of metres away or a hole other room is the 1st viewing point....
Lots of things come into play.:)I think its also quite personal:)
