I was writing an article for a magazine yesterday on decorating Boy's Bedrooms. The article got me thinking of tips for people looking to buy new furniture. I didn't have the space to go into it in the article but I thought we could compile a list here on the forum for other members and visitors.

The two tips I did give in the article were:
To buy the best quality you can afford
And for a child's themed bedroom don't buy furniture with a theme, like a racing car bed. It may not work when your child wants a new theme or look to their bedroom.

The other tips I would suggest are:
Know the exact size you want for the space in your house. If you are not sure if a piece will fit come home and measure first before buying.
Think about the colour and style that will go with the rest of the furniture and your house.
And shop around, visit lots of stores.

What other tips would you add?

Julie-Ann, a few weeks ago I saw a repeat of Colin and Justin's Home Heist, they said exactly the same thing as you. Try and stay away from themed rooms, they took a couple to a furniture store, they chose good quality furniture, then used accessorises to make the bed etc look lovely, ended up with a "teenage" style girls room which looked gorgeous with a throw over the bed, cushions, one soft toy against the pillow.......... The end result was beautiful!!!!! Colin and Justin showed the couple what the bedroom could look like in different stages in the childs life. EXCELLENT!!!!!!

Hi Lorraine
I love that show. In their past shows I found they were too over the top with their decorating. With the Home Heist show it is only their clothing & personality that are over the top:D. I also like how they educate the clients.

Hi Julie-Ann,
I also love their shows, I only wish they had more of them on Austar. I agree with you about Home Heist and their clothing & personality. They are very good at what they do though:) Some of the clients they have had...........well. I haven't seen one of their shows for ages now, most of the shows on Austar are repeats which is so annoying. Another fave of mine on Austar is Dry Spell Gardening with Brendan Moor. ( all repeats again )

In another house we bought sofas too big for the room and it made the room look smaller.I wish we had checked the measurements before.
Also, I try not to spend a lot on furniture which will be used only for a short time but more on furniture that i hope will last for years.
