We are in the process of building our new home in croydon south, vic... we have a while to go as yet. But in the mean time i've been trying to consider some decorating ideas/themes for our home once it's all finished. I guess i've always liked the 'resort' style /theme decorating. I have attached the colours we have picked out for our house. They are more neutral shades- with browns and whites, creams. The furniture we have at the moment is dark chocolate brown. Just wondering if anyone had any idea's on what kind of colours would look good with this resort feel to compliment our dar furniture i.e. orange, red, etc. Also wondering whether it's a good idea to have each room set with a different colour i.e. green pillows, rugs, wall art in one room like the bedroom and red in the living room...or whether it's better to carry the ame colour themes throughout the house...like they do in display homes? Also wondering what kind of decorating items would make the home look more resort style? Any idea's on the resort feel would be great.

Hi lydiakuru,
Welcome to the forum. I like your colours you picked for your house, they are my taste as well. When you say resort style what exactly are you imagining? Balinese, Gold Coast, Mediterranean? My first thoughts are most of the house should carry the same theme but have a couple of feature rooms. Are you having an alfresco or outdoor room?

Yeh, not too sure what resort style we are after...possibly more of the balinese. We has our honeymoon in thailand and loved the resorts we stayed in, so something around that sort of style would be great, Will have to look into meditteranean style also, coz not too sure what the differences are...what are they? I also like the contemporary modern look to design...the simplicity of it-like black & white prints on the wall, but not sure it this would really fit in with theme i'm trying to acheive. Yeh, we are having an alfressco and planning to deck that. We have around a 6meter set back to the back yard, so not much to play with really.

Hi
Firstly I have to confess this style is my weakest. But I have a girlfriend who loves Asia and has done her home Balinese style better than I have ever seen.
I would keep the same basic cream & chocolate colours through the house but yes you can add splashes of colour that are different in each room. But as you said in dislplay homes they carry the colours through and it looks great.
My girlfriend has used cream on the floor tiles and walls but there are chocolate feature walls and chocolate feature tiles in the bathrooms. They have black leather furniture and dark wood dining furniture. The Balinese look comes from the wood furniture and the accessories they have chosen. They have used splashes of red in the living areas but bright green would also look good. The red says Asian more.
Her accessories and art work are stunning but inexpensive. She has buddha ornaments and asain style ornaments and art work. She has like a kimono on one wall-that is so stunning. She has asian style sideboards and side tables. She also has beautiful candles everywhere.
I love going to her house - it is not only so atmospheric but she is a great cook of asian food too:D
But lets see if any one else over the next few days has any suggestions.

Balinese is a difficult style to do well. The colours you've already chosen are very flexible, I'd lean towards buying contemporary furniture and using balinese accent pieces.

Think potted orchids, feature furniture or mirrors with ornate carving, daybeds or 4 poster beds with natural linen and lots of cushions, some decorative items with bone inlay, batik style cushions or throws, buddhas or other god statutes & green leafy plants.

As for colours, I'd lean towards blue or green to keep things cool and calm. As Julie-Ann said red & orange are more Asian.

If you purchase balinese style furniture, be sure to look for quality. A lot of that style of furniture is really cheaply made and is just a waste of $. Pay particular attention to the joints.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice. Some very good idea's and will definately keep in mind. Yeh, it's amazing how colour's can make a huge impact on the feel an enviornment, will definately keep an eye on this when decorating. I do like the browns and greens. There's a great display home that i visited one time, loved the deco. The link is: http://www.metricon.com.au/victoria/homes/chelsea/images/default.aspx
not sure if you'd call it balinese style deco, but love the feel of it. However, it is a little dark. The colours we've picked for our house tho fit more along with this house http://www.metricon.com.au/victoria/homes/imperial/images/default.aspx
with the dark chocolate furniture,, white caesar stone, floors, dark splash back. I think the problem is there are too many idea's that i like, and can't seem to make my mind up on what to have.

Those 2 homes are both stunning. I generally like lighter coloured homes and I think they resell better. But I am going through a dark, moody & sultry phase with more chocolate walls and black furniture.
I should have thought of the orchid:D- I gave one to my girlfriend, who has the resort style house, as a house warming present. The photo below is a type of floral arrangement that could give the asian resort look too.
I will see if my girlfriend can send me some photos of her house but it won't be until the weekend because she works very long hours. So stay tuned:D

You have chosen wise colours as you can dress them up or have the same theme thoughout as Julie-Anne suggested. I would really look around on the internet at different homes and start putting together your pieces of furniture, pictures, cushions, rugs for each room. Once you have that bases you can start adding pieces that compliment by colour or texture. Like using textured cushions on a smooth plain quilt cover that closesly matches the colours in the print on the wall.
For a little research on things that may suit your resort style see my online home decor store and good luck. Katrina Foulkes-Taylor
