Mr16 and I need your help to settle an ongoing dispute:).
I believe when making the bed you should always have a flat sheet between you and the doona cover. Mr16 seems to think this is not necessary and stuffing it still folded at the foot of the bed is enough:mad:.
So we have decided to ask you -do you use a flat sheet when making your bed?

You know, I could never understand why some people don't use a flat sheet. It's so very easy to wash a flat sheet compared to the hassle of taking off a doona cover and also the risk of sweat (we're talking about 16+ boys here!) going through the doona cover. I also did a little experiment on this warmth-wise... having a sheet between you and the doona gives so much extra warmth, it seems strange that something so thin will do that but it does. Of course not needed in this heat but anyway...
Just my 2 cents ;)

Yippee - 1 vote to me:D
I totally agree Angela especially as the doona cover he paid for himself- as it is a Chelsea Football Quilt cover. You would think he would value that:rolleyes:
Thanks for the vote Angela

I'm very much in favour of a flat sheet. I didn't know there were people who didn't use them until I was about 17. I had a boyfriend and none of his family used flat sheets and that should have been a big clue we were totally incompatible!
While we're on the subject, is anyone interested in a guaranteed way to keep sheets tidy in the cupboard? :)

Absolutely - any tips appreciated but I suggest open up a new thread so everyone can find it easily:)

I definitely prefer a flat sheet as well. One of my least favourite jobs is washing the doona covers. I am so not looking forward to teenager years!

A flat sheet - absolutely.
Is this a boy thing? My son didn't want a flat sheet between him & the doona either, and for ages that's how he kept it. I think he couldn't be bother making the bed properly or something.
I don't know what made him change his mind but he's back to using the flat sheet ... if I can ever figure out why, I'll let you know.
ciao,
Elena :)

So there is hope Elena?
How old was your son when he went back to using a flat sheet?
Cheers

He was 17 going on 18 ... so I guess there is hope. He went through this thing of 'fixing' up his room - Cleaning, clearing out, rearranging .... and using the flat sheet, lol.

Have always used a flat sheet ... for all the reasons given. Plus, sometimes the room temperature can get warmer & all you need for a period is the sheet. On top of all that his ' Chelsea' doona could be a problem ... seems to me that Mr 16s favourite team is frequently hot ... or cold!
As this thread is essentially about me, I thought that I should clarify a few things.
Firstly, I don't object to using a flat sheet. If one was to enter my bedroom, they would find that I have a flat sheet on my bed (and no doona, given the weather). I agree wholeheartedly with the previous posters, that a flat sheet is easier to clean, provides added warmth, and keeps your doona clean(er).
The difference seems to be the placing of the flat sheet during the process of making the bed. I place the flat sheet between the doona and fitted sheet, but do not tuck it in and fold it, before placing the doona on top. I still sleep underneath it, still gain the added benefits listed above, but do not use the energy and time required to tuck and fold the flat sheet to a level which my mother deems acceptable.
@Diablo:
Could you please tell me Chelsea's position in the Premier League at the moment? Or the result of their last game? Their record against the other "Top 4" teams? Or their position in their Champions League group?
As I write this post, Chelsea are currently top of the league. They won their last game against Portsmouth, and have won all their games against the tradition "Top 4". They came 1st in their group, including an impressive 4-0 win against Madrid.
Show me another team in an established league who have performed so well. :p

Dear Mr16
Perhaps if you tucked in your flat sheet it would stay in place and in winter you would not just be using the doona come the morning. I will also post pictures of so said folded flat sheet stuffed under Doona cover at the end of the bed, next time I find it:D.
Mr16 has now added an official poll to this thread so even if you have posted already would you be kind enough to click Yes or No to vote.

Hello Mr 16, thanks for the clarification :P but you're still wrong. neener neener. It doesn't count unless you tuck it in.
When I was very young I was scolded and told if I didn't make my bed I wouldn't get my dollar pocket money. (That was big money in the olden days..)
So I asked Mum if she'd make my bed every day if I gave her a dollar :P

While we're at it, a lawyer tip you need to know:
Never ask a question unless you know what the response will be ;)

No sheet! Down with the sheet. The sheet sucks.
I am a 33 year old neat freak with a few interesting twists. Apparently the lack of a sheet is one of them. I am SO anti the sheet... I don't buy them anymore LOL.
I gave up on the sheet (to my mothers horror) after wrestling one night at about 14. Completely over it I pulled it off the bed and gave it up. My husband and I have shared bank accounts, a son and .. can not for the life of us share a doona. We have one each. Yes. Really. A sheet doesn't work in that equation..so we have a doona each and when I make the bed.. we simply put one on top of the other. It looks like one when finished. I wash the doona cover once a week, and the doona insert every 6 weeks or so..
No big deal. At all.
Congratulations Julie... you might be winning the argument and able to share a doona with your sig. other.. but more importantly.. your biggest concern with your son is one many wish they had. Sounds like a great kid to have!
lanne
ps. Master 6 doesnt have one either and finds it FUNNY that Grandma made the bed weird and did two sheets. *much laughter*

I'm sorry but I agree with Lanne - down with the sheet!
You get all tied up and tangled, and just uncomfortable.

Yes and heres my 5 cents for what it worth, no sheet, with boys you still get the sweat and with the extra sheet that just makes for even more laundry, so i say -No sheet means less laundry in the long run. and
Dear MR16
whilst we are on the subject of FOOTBALL - I am a :) Pompey gal :) born and bred, at least we have won the FA cup once this century. :D

No flat sheet for me either, they end up pushed to the bottom of the bed and if we go to a hotel i actually have to loosen everything up before getting into bed because the flat sheet makes me feel claustrophobic :) like my feet are getting strangled in my sleep lol
Fitted Sheet and quilt is the only way to go ;)

I remember this topic very well:D
giggle_smile I am a flat sheet person and I have never had a problem with a flat sheet but I am only 5 feet 5 and my feet don't come anywhere near the end of the bed. However my dh is 6 foot tall and his feet come right to the end so he has to kick his feet up when he gets into bed so he doesn't feel strangled. Also my father in law is quite tall and has the same problem. So maybe it's all to do with how tall you are:)

no flat sheet here...I used to put it on and DH would take it off...the kids don't have one on their beds as they tangle themselves up in it. I don't mind washing doona covers each wash
About 5 years ago I stopped using a flat sheet. Always used to get tangled up in it or it would end up right at the bottom of the bed.

Even though I am now using a coverlet as aposed to a doona........I still have a flat sheet.

I am afraid I still have no luck convincing Mr16 now Mr17 to tuck his flat sheet in so he gets very tangled in it. At the moment he has exams so I am not nagging about anything but study- and that is more about it is time for a rest.
Being the scrooge I am I try to protect the quilt cover with the flat sheet. Quilt covers are so expensive:(
Not sure about the height issue- my DH is 6ft and loves his flat sheet tucked in. I am 5ft 3 & 3/4inches (every bit counts:D) and I have to loosen the flat sheet before going to sleep:confused:

I use a flat sheet (and a cotton blanket) on our bed however I have enough trouble getting the kids to do a decent job of making their beds without complicating the issue with sheets. They just have a fitted sheet and the doona which I wash every week (or so ). I made sure I bought them all washable doonas so they get a good wash in the machine a couple of times a year and that works for us... I wont be giving up my sheets any time soon though ;).

Yes, we do have a flat sheet in between us and a doona. My partner HATES it. He calls it a "choker". I don't think his mum had them when he was a kid so it was a new thing for him when we moved in together. My mum however always had flat sheets as we were growing up...
