How can I tell my friends nicely not to wear their stillettos on my new timber floors? I already have some heel dents from 1 girlfriend who loves to wear stillettos. I don't want to be rude but these floorboards were very expensive. Has anyone else solved this problem tactfully?

Just ask politely would you mind taking your shoes off before you enter the house but at the same time you can't be wearing shoes either :)
Another type of example was when we visited our cousin who had a newly built house with jarrah floorboards and we had suitcase with us with wheels. She politely asked us would we mind carrying the suicases so the wheels didn't mark the flooboards. We understood and didn't have any problems doing it.

I agree with Milena, you just need to ask people to take off their shoes, and if they see you with no shoes on either and a few pairs by the front entrance, then that should be enough with out too much said. I also have polished wooden floors and they do mark very easily, we wheeled a treadmill over ours and now have to live with the small dents the wheels made.

I bought a little shoe rack to put near the front door. We are having my partners family for Christmas so it will be a test to see if they volunteer to take off their shoes or if I have to ask. I dont mind shoes I just dont want them wearing spiky heels. I am very nervous about asking but I dont see any other choice.

We rented a house with timber floors throughout. It was made very clear to use that ANY dents would be repaired at our cost.
I worked from home and had to have clients remove their shoes, as well as any family and friends. MOST people totally understand that it comes with wooden floors... and so I would just ask at the door. I would greet people and say - we have wooden floors, please remove your shoes.
I did find saying would you mind removing them was met with a YES sometimes.. so that was out! An empty stand alone wont say it unfortunately they assume it is for your use. A sign on the door/doorbell might save you asking.

I like the idea of the sign then I don't have to say anything. So much less embarrasing.
