Help! Does anyone know a way to get cat urine out of a rug? I used soda water front and back but it still smells. I have tried white vinegar in the past with no success. Any ideas before I strangle the cat.

Hi Julie-Ann,

There is a product you can get from Pet shops called "Urine-off" they have it in cat version and dog version and you can use that on fabric. Whatever you do though, do not clean cat or dog urine with anything that contains ammonia (e.g. if they pee on the floor) because they are actually attracted to this and will pee in that same spot again.

Unfortunately Urine-off isn't exactly cheap but it's great for emergencies.

We've had our cat for 6 years she doesn't pee in the house but incredibly she did pee on my son's doona only yesterday! I didn't have any Urine-off (ran out of the dog one and never needed the cat one) so I washed the doona (OMO and Napisan in-wash liquid) but the smell is still there. :( So if anyone out there has any other ideas I'd love to hear them because soaking a whole feather down doona in Urine-off doesn't excite me.

The rug cost $500 so I am happy to spend a little to save it. Thanks for the information.
What about having the doona drycleaned? I would tell the drycleaner about the urine and he may be able to use even stronger chemicals.

Hi Julie Ann have you managed to get rid of the cats urine from your rug, phew.
As lovely as cats are they do tend to leave that smell.
You may be better off washing your doona rather than trying to get rid of it with the chemicals at the dry cleaners. It would smell fresher too. Good luck.

The cat urine saga is still continuing - at the moment it is sitting outside because it still smells. I went to the Pet store to get Urine Off but they sold another product which hasn't worked yet. I have used it 3 times but have enough to try a 4th time. If that doesn't work I will see if I can find the Urine Off. But it isn't looking good for the rug or the cat

An update on the smelly rug:

I used a product I bought from the supermarket today. It is called Pet Clean. It has reduced it so the smell is only bad in some patches. I will need to get another bottle buy I think there is hope:). I will let you know.

Great news:D!
The cat urine smell has gone. After about 6 applications of Pet Clean and 2 weeks in the sun the smell has gone. We tested it last night by putting it in a room with a closed door and checked it this morning- no smell. The sun seemed to really help, so hope you don't have this problem in winter;)
Thank you for all your help.
