Moving House is such a stressful experience. Having done it several times I thought I would give a few tips that I’ve picked up.
1. This is a pretty comprehensive checklist of all the services and companies you might need to contact to change your address. Remember some companies may need 2 weeks notice.

2. Hire a removalist company to pack and unpack for you, preferably one who also puts a bunch of flowers and dinner on the table too.
If your budget won’t stretch to that or you are just too scroogy like me here are some other tips.
3. There are some things you will need to be able to get easy access to when you get to your new home. These are my suggestions:
A kettle and supplies for making a coffee or tea during the day, and a bottle of champagne and glasses for later.
Cleaning supplies to wipe down shelves and benches in the new home.
Basic essentials such as toilet paper, light bulbs, a torch and some basic tools.
A bag for each member of the family with their toiletries, pyjamas, a change of clothes, towel and bed linen.
A few pieces of crockery and cutlery to get you through the evening and the next day.
4. Defrost the fridge and freezer the day before.
5. This is a good time to sort through your things and throw away, or give away some of those things you don’t use or need anymore. Throw out the junk and reduce the clutter. It will only mean there is less to move.
6. If you have ordered new furniture organise a delivery date for a couple of days after moving in.
7. Packing your items:
Pack room by room so when you arrive at your new home each box can be put into the appropriate room. Label each box with what room it belongs to.
Keep a log of what is in each box. This is especially helpful for boxes that are not unpacked straight away. In an exercise book allocate a number for each box then write what is in each box next to that number. It will make it so much easier to find that one item that you go searching for 6 months later. When we were building we had boxes in storage and the number of times we would search every box before we found what we wanted.
Don’t make the boxes too heavy. Pack a mix of heavy and light things if possible.
Mark FRAGILE on any boxes that contains breakable items, so that everyone knows.
If you have any other tips please add them on.
My friend Kathy is moving in two weeks and without the use of packers, so lets give her as many helpful tips as possible.
Good luck with the move Kathy.
