All I need to finish Mr17's study is black and white office accessories. Specifically he wants some large A4 files, a box to hide all the chargers in, and perhaps a container for pens etc. They need to be black and white in a pattern to suit a teenage boy's study and this fantastic rug. I am up to a little craft if necessary. Has anyone seen anything suitable?

I would be careful not to make the items to feminine. When you are at the shopping malls the little fun stationery shops are full of girls and their young mums. If you are into crafting perhaps black metal box. A second hand one painted black with white stencil lettering. You could even do buildings around it to go with the mat.
Or black punched metal office accessories. Or a tool box with the diamond finish - usually silver but you could investe painting.

You are right Decorheaven- so many of the products on the market are feminine or just plain. I think it will involve my buying some striped wallpaper and covering files and boxes in that. How hard can that be after 12 years of covering books in contact paper:D

I called in to a local wallpaper shop during the week to see if there was anything suitable to cover files and boxes for Mr17's study. I found the most stunning wallpapers but at $135 for a 10 metre roll it was a bit too pricey.
So I have decide to go with these striped boxes from Ikea and to print some paper in a similar stripe for the files. The boxes are a bit darker than I wanted but I think the rug is going to make such a statement that these don't need to.
So another trip to Ikea next week:)

I love the boxes you found, very masculine looking.:thumbs up: If you get that rug I think it's all going to go so well together and look fantastic:)
Have you shown it to Mr17? What does he think?

Thanks Milena. I showed Mr17 & DH- they are both being very agreeable and saying whatever you think. This is very unlike them both:confused:.

My dh says that to me all the time:) Don't be  just :love it::D

I love the boxes you found Julie-Ann. Ikea is just the best.
Must be nearly time for a photo of the finished room.

I am only confused because they are rarely this agreeable Milena:D.
We are very close to the end. We just bought an office chair. I will take a photo when it is put together. Of course Mr17 chose one of the most expensive chairs in the place. I did make him kick in $50- mostly to teach him the value of money and also because he has more than me:(. This chair is so damn comfy:love it:.
The glass and the rug should arrive this week- so I am hoping to take photos before the end of the week.

Julie-Ann, I'm looking forward to the pictures. Also interested to see a review say in 6 months. Pictures may or may not be appropriate then. My boy is grown up now but I still remember the floor-robe. Perhaps I was just typical Mum and he had to make a statement somehow.

My boy is grown up now but I still remember the floor-robe.
Lol - yes he has a floor-robe going and a floor-bin and floor-sink (dirty dishes):(. I have forbidden clothes to enter the study as I found several items in the first week strewn across the room. I told him his clothes were like a virus spreading their mess throughout the house. And I am restricting the virus to his bedroom only. Although we do find socks in the room where his Playstation is:mad:.
I think they are all the same:(.

ohhh he may be ready to take over the world.. after his exams ;)
I am chasing a new office chair. I found one in office works which frankly looks like something lazy boy made and a pensioner would love.. but.. boy was it comfortable. It even reclined..
Can you share a link to this chair?

Lanne it was from Officeworks and is called the York (http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Furniture/Chairs/Leather-and-Plush-Chairs/OWYORKHB). This (http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Furniture/Chairs/Fabric-Chairs/OWKOMOHB) Komo Managers chair was 2nd on his list. Both seemed to give good lumber support but be very comfy for long hours of sitting.

He looks really relaxed in his new chair:) Hope he really enjoys his new study!
We desperately need a new desk chair and I will be shopping for one very soon:)

Officeworks seemed to have the best range (in Perth) from very cheap to pricey but affordable. In Perth some Officeworks stores are bigger than others so had a bigger range. Good luck with the chair hunt Milena:)

Hi JA, I used a combinatio of those Ikea boxes, black & white file boxes & magazine boxes in Dan's room - it works well and they are very reasonably priced.

No pictures now - I should have taken them when I did the room originally while he was in Cairns - when he came home he loved it and we discussed how it was going to stay organised and tidy but..........I guess I was kidding myself!!!!

I'm afraid so- they are a lost cause- well at least until those exams are over and then the whip will be out:D.

Thanks Julie-Ann the York and the Komo were the two I looked at, at our local officeworks. They york was more stylish but the komo.. which looks like a lazyboy and has 0 style IMHO was ohhhh soooooo comfy. I keep thinking about those 12 hour long stretches of editing. LOL... i may have to go comfort over style.

I agree the Komo was like sitting on a bed of feathers- very comfy. I don't know why he chose the York- not because it is more stylish. I don't think he realised the Komo also reclines. I think you deserve nothing less than a bed of feathers to float on whilst you work- buy it:)

Well some good news- the rug arrived and is stunning:clapping:.
The bad news is it is black and cream, not off white:(.
Some more bad news- I bought the black and white striped boxes yesterday from Ikea.
The solution= I'm going to spray the boxes white. Then find a cream and black pattern on the computer, print that on to A3 sheets and recover the boxes. I hope that will work.
I guess decorating isn't always easy.

Is it reallllly reallllly noticeable Julie-Anne, I mean the boxes and the rug being different shades.... could you just swap the stripe boxes for the plain black ones.....or are they already opened?
What a bug ger.
Julie-Ann
02-09-2010, 04:51 PM
Yes it is very noticeable:(. I had hoped it wouldn't be. And yes- being Miss Organised I unwrapped them and put them together last night. Oh well I had nothing else to do but cover some boxes:rolleyes::D

So here are the pictures of the boxes and the rug. The white files on the bookcase will be covered in striped paper similar to the boxes.
Am I crazy? Ok don't answer that one:D
Do you think there is a big difference between the cream in the rug and the white on the boxes? I am a little fussy and like everything to be just so- but I guess most of you have figured that out already:D.
I wouldn't have noticed at all J-A. It's nice to mix it up a bit. Looking fantastic! A-M xx

Julie-Ann, I think it looks fine and agree that you don't really notice the difference.
However, the rug does look very different in colour to the picture I remember seeing on the website. Still looks great though, and a very inventive nod to NY.

I'm afraid it still is driving me crazy. I have rung Deals Direct to see if by chance this rug is faulty and they have some the right colour. Fingers crossed:).

I am surpirsed how different the rug is also.....I would push the idea and the thought that it doesn't bring confidence to promoting them on a ceratin decorating forum....;) No really though, if they can not help its time to find a new use for those boxes and some plain black ones will work really well.
Good luck with your phone call. It will continue to drive you mad so I know we will have to find a solution.;)

You know me too well Elements. The rug is rolled up waiting for a reply. I did happen;) to mention on the phone that there were pictures of the rug on the Decorating Forum- a forum I happen to be involved with. But to be honest they were very nice and I think if they have the correct colour they will have no problem swapping it over. Stay tuned:)

I can't remember reading what your son thought about the mix of colours. Like you it would annoy me. I think the boxes are far enough away to get away with the variation. See what he thinks and if he is totally happy more effort could be time wasted. I would try to do what we prefers and not look down when in the room!!

Rofl- it's a very big mat and hard to not see when you enter the room:D
DH and Mr17 don't actually care- which is rare:confused:. So it's all up to me.
I was just at Spotlight and was thinking if I decide to keep this rug I could paint the boxes black and try to get some cream lettering - then put words/ titles on the boxes.
